Recently changed job - qualify for any asisstance

Afternoon all.
My nephew left his old job on friday 21 march, and started new job on monday 24 march .
By the middle of the week the business decided to shutdown and all staff sent home .
He has had an email off his boss to say may not be able to pay him for any longer

Does he qualify for any type of govt asisstance , the 80% scheme or anything ?

thanks any advice,
mick

no his current employer can’t furlough him as he wasn’t on the PAYE on February 28th

try looking at Universal credit or one of the many other threads about that

If needed look at eligibility for Universal Credit https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/

There are online calculators to help you assess entitlement  https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • I started working for my current employer on 3 Feb 2020, in a temp capacity through an agency.  The company asked me to stay on, which I accepted and began working for them direct on 9 March 2020.  They have had to lay most of us off work and have wrote to us to say we would be Furloughed and receive 80% of our usual salary.  I have now heard from them to say they are not able to Furlough me as I was not employed by them on 28 Feb 2020.  I am still employed by them and they want me to go back as soon as they are able to trade again - surely the Government need to re-look at this, as although their rescue packages sound great, their are huge holes in them that people like myself are slipping through.

yes, I agree, should be a safety net for people who did change job without knowing what was about to hit them
  • I may be in a similar situation.
Despite handing in my notice at the beginning of Jan, I moved jobs on 9/3 after being instructed to work my full a 12 week notice period for my last employer.
Is there any indication that the government likely to look at claims similar to mine on a case by case basis?

    None at all I'm afraid.
  • so no support through the retention scheme for new employees after 28th February?
Surely they're as important to 'retain' through this process to have a viable business the other side??
so what are business's doing - laying off? and 'sorry we cant pay you through this process' off you go to universal credit?
are they then still an employee etc?

Employees who were made redundant by their previous employer after 28 February 2020 can ask that employer if they can be rehired and furloughed. The previous employer can choose to say no. You can seek a mortgage break, and check eligibility for universal credit. The trouble is that after only a few days in a new job, you have built up very few rights.

There is a petition going on Change.Org for those caught in the March trap  http://chng.it/XQXtxtVXpx
We need to sign and share it to get the government to amend the scheme to include those on payroll in March
    Please sign and share
Both myself and my daughter are caught in this mess
Not what was announced - On the payroll and backdated to 1st of march is what they said !
