Sky Router Replacement

im after recommendations on a replacement for a Sky router that I have which is unstable where the WiFi drops out all the time and I think its time for an upgrade.

im on Sky’s fibre broadband but its a copper cable to the cabinet not fibre cable itself.

I do have 2 netgear extenders in the house which do their job but I feel the Sky router itself needs replacing.

If the router is the problem then sky should be replacing it. Have they tested the line? Have they run diagnostics to identify any other issues. When I had a problem with internet dropping with sky they identified a reins issue at the exchange and released me from my contract.

You shouldn't be on a fibre contract if your cabinet hadn't been updated to fibre.

  • they’ve sent a replacement router but been reading elsewhere where they say that the ISP routers are poor and alot of people have Asus or TP Link routers and there performing better so need recommendations on the best model to get without breaking the bank.

And they have upgraded to fibre in my area but its just joined onto the existing old copper line if you get me.

Yes, it is FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and you might consider FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) to negate the need for using the old copper cables.

In the real world (affordable) FTTP is simply not an available option for the majority !

You are right, which is why I am still two baked bean tins with a bit of string tied between them!

What Sky router do you have and are you having the same issues with the new one they sent?

If it's only the wifi that's the problem, why not buy a wireless access point and use that with the Sky router?
If you have an old router (from another ISP?), you could use the wireless access point on that and disable the on one the Sky box -- that's what I've done.
If you really want a router, the DrayTek ones I've used have been very reliable, and they get great reviews.  A bit pricey, though...
  • im gonna get one of the TP Link routers and does Sky restrict using 3rd party routers and if so is there a way round it?
