Hello allDumpling I was so sorry to read about Steve's mum, please have a big hug from me and pass one to Steve and the children too.Well after DD's fiasco with our surgery yesterday and them sending DGS to A&E, he seems much better this morning and is x boxing with Mr Fix It. I hope the painkillers are working as the hospital is not the best place to be, because it is the hot spot for covid patients and they were umming and ahhing as to whether to keep him in and operate. He has a pass straight through A&E if he's still in pain in a couple of days, fingers crossed that's not the case.Today I have stripped the bed and the WM is on. Hopefully it will dry outside but there is not much sun today, there is a very strong wind though and it's freezing. I shall remake the bed later and throw the hoover and duster around.Nothing much else to report, I really wanted to get back out into the garden and attack the roots I unearthed yesterday, but it may be just too cold. I'm such a delicate little flowerNelski well done on getting your almost full shop. It must be easier to get most things now, but getting a slot is a different matter.taff Yes to squidgy cwtches at the moment, but at the end of this I may look like a cross between a short version of Olive Oil and a grey haired RapunzelTake care all, hugs a plenty coming your way.nan xxFailure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently11

Been shoppping - all very civilised out there. Once at the supermarket there was only a small queue during happy hour and the staff were diligent about turning away those not eligible. Only item missing was The Times and that was down to a distribution problem at W so I got it elsewhere.DM's friend isn't coming today as he's feeling under the weather, nothing to do with the virus though he's not taking any chances with DM. I took him some provisions and left them at the top of the stairs, at least he has milk, bread, eggs and his paper.I can still remember our first phone number and it sometimes pops out of my mouth in place of my own home number, the landline is not really used anymore. MONO - that's a great family story! Now I've got books to read and TV programmes to watch - such a busy life!11

Great to hear your phone stories - for a while I had an elderly lady phoning here asking to speak to Jean. I told her there was no Jean here and she had the wrong number. She argued that Jean did live here and it was I that had the wrong number!
The weather is still lovely but has clouded over a little. The downstairs windows have been washed, decided if I was confined to the house it would be nice to see out!
I started a Whatsapp group for our road, one of the chaps is a world class piper and will be playing outside his door for us at 1pm, should be good!11 -

Every year Glasgow Green is a wonderful sight (and sound) when the championships take place. All I can play is the bluetooth speaker.Washing washed. Tea drunk. DM fed.11

Afternoon all, I wanted to say how sorry I was to hear about Steve's Mum dumpling, awful news to wake up to (((hugs))) to you allWe didnt have a house phone when I was growing up until quite late on, I can remember walking up to the phonebox a street away to ring my boyfriend( DH ) so it must have been when I was about 17 by the time Dad relentedThere has been a fire on the moors near us this week, 40 firefighters were there and now they think it was started deliberately - words fail me, as if they don't have enough to do at the moment ...I think I'm going to make a curry for tonights tea. I put the root ends of some spring onions and a leek in water a few days ago and have been quite surprised at how much they have grown, they can add a bit of flavour if you haven't got much inTake care all xx:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. monnagran, our current phone number is one digit away from a surgery in another county and I often get calls for it. If
people leave a message on our answerphone I think how cross they will be to get no reply.
We also had a party line when I was growing up. We lived next door to my grandparents (although quite a distance because they were in a farmhouse and there was a railway line between us. Dad rigged up a phone line using those old candlestick phones so that we could talk to them for free.
Also, I astonish my children by telling them that when I went to University in Bangor I couldn't dial direct home but had to go through the operator (42p for 3 minutes in 1976). Mum could dial direct so I used to ask for a reverse charge and mum would refuse it then call the pay phone where she knew I'd be waiting. It seems like the dark ages to my kids.9 -
Our house phone was one digit away from a taxi firm and we got fed up of the worse for wear dialling the wrong number when they wanted a taxi home from the pub! Usually in the early hours on a Friday night! This went on for a few years then abruptly stopped, We never found out why but we were glad when it did!
When I tell my DGDs about growing up with no tv, no phone, especially no smartphone and no computer they can't understand how we coped!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"9 -
When I was a Brownie and then a Girl Guide we had to carry a little tin which contained:1) a safety pin2) a piece of elastic3) Tuppence for the phoneBoth the safety pin and elastic were in case your knicker elastic brokeWhen did we have to press button A and button B? I can't remeber the sequence.8
-
Gers, it was button A to actually speak when someone at the other end answered. Button B was what you pressed to get your tuppence back if they were not in. You also pressed it at the end of your call in the usually vain hope that it had not registered and you would get it back. Also, if you passed a kiosk it was always worth a pop in to press button B in case someone else hadn't managed to get through to the number they called and had forgotten to reclaim their money.
That hardly ever happened, but 2d was 2d and it was always worth a try.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Have trouble remembering how to fly.7
