Took due note of Farway's comments and have now got a "Faraday cage" type little bag coming through for my phone. So I can still carry my phone round on me (in case I need to use it). But it can't be tracked. Would have pretty much given up having a mobile phone otherwise - but one of my more conventional friends promptly said "But what about if you have an accident walking in the countryside round here - how are you going to make a call for help?" and so it wasnt just me wondering how I would do precisely that if I binned my phone.

Be aware that even if the phone is switched on, you will not receive any calls because the phone is screened.
Additionally, as the phone has no signal it will turn up to its highest power to try to contact a phone mast and thus deplete your battery faster.
The simplest solution is to leave it switched off when not in use. Leaving it switched off negates the need for any sort of screening bag.

A friend of mine is similarly paranoid about being tracked by phone and also never uses a cheque, debit or credit card for similar ‘profiling’ reasons, preferring to take out a lump of cash from his bank once a month.  He also doesn’t have an email address and is pretty much computer-illiterate so never browses anything online.
He was quite content about his ‘under the radar’ lifestyle until I pointed out that he has probably made himself stick out from the crowd for the very reason that he doesn’t have a ‘profile’.
It’s a bit like millions of small fish shoaling together for protection from predatory fish.  The shoal itself is highly visible but the individual members can ‘hide’ amongst all the other near-identical fish, confusing the predators.   My friend has effectively taken himself out of this ‘shoal’ and will now stick out like a sore thumb!
Similar to the recent facial recognition trials, the ones who hid their faces were the ones then fully checked
