Mot test extension

Hi, my sons mot runs out today, but we are all in self isolation. Does anyone know if this will be taken into account as the 6 month extension doesn't start till 30th March. Alternatively will we be able to present his car for test when we come out of self isolation?

you will not be able to get the extension but you will be able to get an mot when you come out of self isolation
  • Its ok to drive a car without MOT, to a pre-booked garage to do an MOT test.

But you find an MOT garage that is actually still open.  While exempt from the mandatory closure of shops, many garages have simply shut down.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

ATS are staying open for essential work. They have to do MOTs until 31st March. worth ringing when you come out of isolation and explain why you need an MOT The MOT system may be suspended from 1st April and no-one could log on to do one.

But likely you won't be needing to use the car anyway until the restrictions are lifted.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I'm not clear about how to interpret the relaxation for MOTs due after 1st April. Does it mean you can't /shouldn't take car for MOT for 6 months after it currently expires or you ? I was gong to book mine in for early April but not sure where I stand, if it's optional I suppose it makes sense to delay
  • it means they havnt got a clue if any garages are going to be open or not , if you mot place is open , take it or dont take it , remember all mot places will be fully booked up when the virus subsises (6 mths) and you may not be able to get test , and as exemption is finished you will be driving with no mot

The new legislation is a bit ambiguous, imho. However, this is my understanding of the current position. I posted the following on the other MOT thread a few days ago and the legislation hasn’t been updated since it was first published on 25th March. If you follow the link below you can choose to receive ‘email alerts’ re Car, motorcycle and van MOT tests.

Just to re-iterate, this is my own take on the situation,...I’m certainly no expert in this area.

    *********************************

The legislation doesn’t say anything about a 6-month window from April to October,...it just says that every MOT that expires after April 1st will automatically be extended by 6-months, ...however, I think the devil is in the detail because it also says  this:

“You can check your MOT history to see when you have been issued an exemption. It will not be updated straight away, so keep checking back if your new due date MOT is not yet showing.

You will not get a paper exemption certificate”

i.e. don’t assume the legislation automatically (come what may) grants  a 6-month extension to EVERY Mot that expires after 1st April 2020.

Perhaps they’ll just update the revised MOT dates on a month by month basis until the crisis is over. So you may be lucky (if lucky is an appropriate word) and get a 6-month extension, but once the crisis recedes MOT dates will not be extended and the current expiry date will remain as is.

     Who knows???

Speaking as someone who used to be involved in legislation ...

At the moment the links are purely guidance, showing what's intended.

We're still in the period of consultation - I guess that will be a minimum effort - a few phone calls to the head of the RAC, VOSA, etc.  The 'legislation' (actually just a statutory instrument as I understand it) should be enacted tomorrow, and VOSA etc should tell us what the final wording is then.

Until tomorrow, it's just a proposal.

For people wanting absolute clarity: I'm astonished at how much the government has done over the last month.  The normal review processes have turned into rubber stamping, so there will be some things that are not quite right.  In the interests of getting the bigger picture good enough, that's the price we have to pay.

Minor detail: That's not the legislation. That's guidance. Gov.UK guidance pages are not unknown to be wrong...

The legislation itself was due to be introduced tomorrow (Monday 30th), but both houses have been suspended early for the Easter recess.

I suspect this is being done by Statutory Instrument, because it's not part of the Coronavirus Act, which received Royal Assent on the 25th.

  • when i first read this , I like others thought , how the hell are they going to cope with all those MOTs when the extension is over ,
quick calculation , any vehicle over 3 yrs old and for 6 mths , so thats 50% (6 mths) of all 3 yr + cars on the road

but on re reading , it is obvious , a car that mot runs out say first week in april , will be exempt untill september , whereas a car that MOT expires in say august will have extension till jan next yr

this is almost like saying your last mot was a mot for 18 mths
not a bad this a longer mot , cars are being built var better than the 60s , maybe we should increase the mot lengh , 2 yrs maybe
