thinking to buy car for about £600 - 20 year old car.   I just want a cheap runner.
Just noticed the advert says
Part Ex To Clear / All Part Ex Cars Sold On Trade Terms Only
Can they do this to mean if it develops a fault you cannot return it within 30 days?  Anything I can do to protect myself?
Thanks

  • No he can't but the expectations of a £600, 20 year old car must be reasonable.  You can't expect it to be free of all defects and be perfect.

Is there still a right to return within 30 days?

There probably is but if they are selling it as seen so expect an uphill battle. Then it's also a 20 year old car for £600 - your expectations here are low.
You were sounding like you were desperate to buy any car to get to work, so it may be worth getting this until you find something better. Give it a look over and a decent test drive and see how you get on. If you can get a couple of weeks out of it then you're doing pretty well.

£600 car from a trader is probably worth £300 expect rust and rot and plenty of it, do not expect it to pass the next MOT if it has one already.

Nothing they say or do can affect your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act.
However... remember those rights are tempered for used goods by reasonable expectations for the age, relative price and apparent condition.

Ultimately, the test is would it be reasonable to expect any particular issue from the goods at this stage in their life, if you'd owned them from new?

For a £600 20yo car, if it doesn't terminally expire at the side of the road within a week, you've had your money's worth.

Don't touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap as soon after you leave the vendor's premises as you can, and stand 2m away from the vendor at all times.

Is the point not that if sold by a trader on a retail basis, it must be roadworthy, whereas if sold to another trader no such obligation exists?

No, not that simple. It's perfectly legal to sell an unroadworthy vehicle to the public. Buyers just need to be made aware of that, and cannot be allowed to drive it away. Unroadworthy cars are regularly sold in this country for tens, even hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Yes, a £600 car needs to be roadworthy at the point of sale if it's being sold as roadworthy. That does not mean it needs to be roadworthy next week, let alone in 5 months time.

Yes, look for another example to buy, why have you got to buy that particular vehicle?

It's an expensive bit of scrap metal. It in no way meets the desired attributes of either "cheap" or "runner"
