I was staying in travelodge the day they closed, had a 4 day booking from Sunday to Thursday and was asked to leave with 2 hours notice! The woman was really apologetic and let us stay in the room an extra hour as we couldn’t get trains until then back home! They refunded all the nights as when I checked out the manager was on the phone to reception which was lucky so asked about refund and the manager allowed a full refund! Not sure where people stand who have bookings for the future though! Now Trainline that’s a different kettle of fish!

Yeah Travelodge totally freaked out that day! It was bizarre how they behaved. Glad you got your money back.  They haven't been too bad apart from that one 48 hour period - their 'Mike Ashley' moment.

Trains are the only refunds I have had zero problems with. So quick and easy to just fill out a tiny form and money in bank within 2 days.

The Trainline for me has been totally useless, They let me refund the few cheap ones on there app but for my return trip to London they didn’t let me refund first of all then they changed it so you can refund on there app but when you do says you need to go out to the post office and post them back as they were printed. When they finally responded on twitter gave me a copy paste reply, so I braved it and went to the post office and paid next day delivery only to find out no one is working at the refund office until further notice but insist people send them back! I wouldn’t be so mad but it’s over 200 quid I lose which I can’t afford at the moment.

I have said it before and I will keep saying it , you haven't lost any money , you lost that when you paid it over , ALL you have lost is a night away , and experience , a what ever .
That is true in the case of travelodge. However I am having worse problems wit National Holidays who are issuing unprotected gift vouchers which expire in a year that I won't be able to use. The trip (tomorrow) was a 60th birthday present for my parents and now I have no money, no trip and I'll have to get them something else now.

My other half is effectively losing his 30th birthday and a weekend away. He isnt stomping his feet like an annoyed toddler about it.

Would be good if people could report their successes or otherwise with claiming train tickets back, remembering to include the company you're claiming from and what type of ticket it is.

    I'll start:
TransPennine Express, claiming for Advance tickets (not usually refundable) - online form to fill in and print off, then post tickets off.  Seems pretty easy.  Not had any money back yet though!

Avanti West Coast, Advance tickets - bit of a nightmare.  Fill in online form, submit, couple of days later receive email asking for the booking ref. (which was on the online form), reply with this again, couple of days after that receive another email asking for tickets to be posted back to them by recorded delivery!  They couldn't make it any more of a faff if they wanted to.

Good idea to get feedback on success stories but this is probably not the best thread (as it is about Travelodge)

Done.  I will delete my post above.  Anyone reading this - I've started a new thread about reclaiming train tickets.

They are two different companies with different operating models.  There may be very valid reasons why they can't do the same.  The simple solution is to remember which companies deserve your custom in future, and which don't.  I've got quite a blacklist going.
Me too. That would make an excellent subject for a thread!
Probably get deleted PD though.
