I am amazed that the newsagents are going to apply. I humbly stand corrected. I really don't think it's designed for this sort of case, so it may be rejected.

The work doesn't have to essential. Apart from specified activities work is to continue but should be done at home unless this is not possible. Delivering papers obviously cannot be done a time home. That seems to me to pose a lot of questions but it’s what the duo dance says.

You should only leave the house for one of four reasons:
    • Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible.
    • One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household.
    • Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
    • Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Thanks for the advice but I’m not in agreement. Food and medicine is essential in these times, not a newspaper.

Surely this scheme is only for anyone paid through PAYE. £40 a week is well below the threshold for him to even bother registering him, as is £80pw as it happens.

I was wondering whether this thread is an elaborate wind up, or I have fallen down the hole to Wonderland. In that spirit, I guess social distancing is addressed, as in my experience paper boys throw the paper from at least 2 metres away.

No I'm not saying the newspaper run would be suitable for the retention scheme (however all UK businesses of all sizes are eligible).
I am saying the OP's son has a legitimate reason to do leave home and do the run. I would argue it can be seen as an essential work activity because of the service he provides to isolated customers -- as long as he keeps the distance.

OP: Morale is equally as important as any medicine.
And they still have the crossword section right? Keeps people going for hours!

    Jeremy535897: Are you serious!
I think you might be forgetting about the population over the age of 70 that are still alive and well, and are now effectively being placed under house arrest.
They may not prefer to switch to an online version if they like to do the newspaper crossword.

I say throw them the newspapers if that would be their preference.

My father in law is 85 and would be perfectly capable of doing crosswords online. Not everyone over 70 is technically illiterate.
