Can employers claim 80% of wages for teenager part time job?

Hi could anyone advise? My son is a 17yr old college student and has two part time regular paper rounds, earning around £40 per week. He obviously can’t work at the moment but could his employer claim the 80% of the cost of his wages so he could potentially still get paid?

I expect it’s cash in hand so no.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I cannot conceive that it could be worth two newsagents applying to the coronavirus job retention scheme to pay out about £70 a month each to your 17 year old son over three months. (And if it is the same newsagent for both paper rounds my answer would not alter.) If you can afford to, give it to him yourself.

    Are you sure?

Thank you - yes, it’s not classed as essential work which is the only work you can leave the house for

I thought I heard on the radio that Newsagents are on list to be able to remain open.

Newsagents are remaining open so he will still be able to work.
  • Thanks all - both employers are going to apply via the scheme for him actually
newsagents can stay open but grey area as to whether delivering papers is an essential job I guess.

That's not correct. As of the date of this post, you can leave the house for work "if it is essential to do so".

I would argue that his paper run is 100% essential as it delivers papers to his customers. Many of those may be elderly who are in isolation and rely on newspapers as one of the few sources of information, as well as part of their enjoyment of life - crucial at this time.

I would check with the newsagent to see whether they will still be continuing the paper run for the time being. If so, he should be able to do it as long as he stays 2m away from all public especially elderly customers.

This advice will change daily, so please keep up with advice on what can and cannot be done.
