Or walk it, it's only 45 minutes. Or have it delivered. Or...………......etc.
45 minutes each way. One way with heavy shopping (need to try to get food for at least a week). And if they (small Aldi) don't have the things I need, then Sainsbury's is an hour each way walking.

Deliveries impossible. I tried last night. No slots available.

Car was booked in for an MOT tomorrow. Testing Centre closed yesterday.

If the Government doesn't change the law, then I will become a criminal.

    "Or... (etc)" starve?

But thank you for your concern and your constructive helpful comments.

Common sense is telling me that we should be able to apply for a month or 2 month MOT extension direct from D&VSA - but....

Common sence is telling me that a car needs to be safe and legal on the road, we should be sticking to those principles

An MOT certificate only says that the vehicle was roadworthy on the date the certificate was issued.
In our case, our car is 5 years old with less than 15k miles and is regularly checked by Mr S so I'm confident that our vehicle is safe.  Yes, there are cars out there which are long overdue for scrapping,  but have valid MOTs - but that's another story.
And it's not just the MOT - once that has expired the insurance is no longer valid.
Be assured that if we can't get our car MOTd, and if the current certificate isn't extended, then the car will stay in our garage.
My insurance policy doesn't say that.  Does yours?  It's an oft portrayed myth but not always the case
and was even pedalled by an expert on radio 2 !!!
  • Where we live is a bit out in the sticks, and public transport is iffy at the best of time. Our car just died so we are now reliant on either walking or hoping the buses are running.
However, we have found lots of local suppliers are now delivering now, I'd imagine this is the same up and down the country.
Ask on social media for help, again lots of things have sprung up offering help to those that are struggling.
45 minutes isn't that far, 3 miles. We are fully expecting that we may have to walk to our nearest farm shop to get supplies at some point, that's around 3 miles but having to go across the fields takes about an hour. Buy what you need and put it in a rucksack rather than carrier bags and it'll be much easier.

There are other options available to you without the government changing policy on MOT's or you breaking the law.

How many other test centres have you phoned? https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/active-mot-test-stations
  • I have seen several garages closed the one I normally use is open but cant do MOTs as they say the MOT centre is closed and so is the parts centre that they get all the parts delivered  from every day, How are we supposed to get an MOT if we have all these obstacles in the way, you cant travel far as they often take all day and you dare not travel by public transport , isnt it time they gave the Domestic MOT the same grace they have given Commercial MOTs, 3 months ! As of next week I cant use my car and will become even more isolated and I live on my own, Something needs to be done soon !!

No, they don't. An MOT takes less than an hour. Phone around, find somewhere open, get a timed slot, sit outside in the sun while the car's in there.

No, because commercial vehicle operators have a lot more than just an annual MOT checking they aren't driving a shed. They have mandated internal maintenance schedules, as part of their operator's licence. THAT's not being suspended. https://www.gov.uk/being-a-goods-vehicle-operator/maintaining-your-vehicles

Umm, you haven't mentioned needing to use the vehicle for those essential food-shopping journeys, so it makes no difference...

B'sides, you've had three weeks to get it tested and maintain the same expiry date...
  • Ahh they have just granted a 6 month extension for Domestic MOT, thats great

6 months was more than I was expecting, but makes sense.  3 months lockdown followed by 3 months to catch up on the backlog.
We will have our car routinely serviced/MOTd as soon as we can - but I bet there are people out there only too ready to take full advantage !
