Boris's address

So what does this mean, is it just non food shops that have to close?
or will this extend to other sectors like factories?

  • I'd imagine it depends on what the factories are manufacturing.

All shops need to close except those ones supplying critical goods.
Other business that are not retail shops aren't part of that as it seems to only affect shops. People must work from home if they can but they can travel to work if they cannot work from home (however seems public transport is being reserved for key workers - so that may mean many people shouldn't go to work anyway)

Finally Boris seems to be getting it but there are still too many loopholes. The exercise loophole is big enough drive a supertanker through. As for travel to work, it should be restricted to keyworkers only, your loft conversion can wait. Lets see if these measures are actually enforced.

Thank goodness we can still have "one form of exercise" a day - so I can still go for a solo walk to get exercise/try and stay calm. Now need a refresher course in non-verbal language to nearby passersby - waves/thumbs up/thumbs down/about to burst in tears/etc.

I do feel sorry for those that have insecure jobs/work in the gig economy/etc.

The PM's address still leaves many loopholes sadly.
For example, my wife can easily work remotely from home but when she requested this a week ago the boss was NOT happy with her request.
I think there must be many other employees in the same situation

I think really he needs to shut all business but keep things open that are involved in online, logistics, medical and food sectors.
It just doesn't go far enough in my eyes.
Apparently he hasn't even briefed the police that this was going to happen and how they should go about it.

Yeah, that would be a good idea. Don't know why it hasn't already happened.

I'm glad he's finally gone this far but agree with some others, he should have said keyworkers to travel to work only. My mums work are telling her to still go in but her job is not essential and if they were more proactive they could probably get her set up at home.
Employers will still request people in. As we already saw, the whether spoons boss believed Covid19 hadn't been spread in bars?!? And so he would have stayed open if he hadn't have been forced to shut!
