Just think of Facebook as a public noticeboard. Only put information on there that you would be happy to see in public and then you don't really have anything to worry about. I know people who use only their real first name with a made up surname, no profile picture and an incorrect date of birth when signing up. They never post anything on their and just use it to monitor several groups that interest them and to talk to other people using the messenger app.spudpie said:RumRat said:If you can do without it, then keep away. Thanks for your post. I agree with you completely. I've kept away from Facebook for a very long time, (I'm 67) but I'm in quite a lot of clubs, fishing, cycling, running etc and they're very much geared up to using using their Facebook pages to arrange things. Hence the reason for me doing the unthinkable and joining in.2 -
That is what I feel about the majority of the sites, the only people who have my real details are the bank, people i purchase off, people who give me a service aka ISP, amazon, ebay and paypal. The council does not need it, or gas or electric companies. Limit the attack surface. Set up another email with dummy info, no mobile, for the non financial and social account, that will possibly be hacked, and if they get compromised it for me is no biggie,Takmon said:.Just think of Facebook as a public noticeboard. I'm with spudpie here. I've kept well away from FB. There have been far too many bad news stories for comfort.Takmon said:Just think of Facebook as a public noticeboard. As somebody who is self-isolating during the current crisis, I was interested in finding out more about nextdoor.co.uk . The only way to get info is to sign up with FB! So fake names would probably be out.
I suppose I could follow the example of Spike Milligna, 'the well-known typing mistake'.

I use Nextdoor. It's limited to your local area. You can join without Facebook but someone will need to verify you. I don't use my real name but it needs to be you correct address. You can set your profile to show only your street name or your street name and house number. I set mine to street name only. Having said that there is a MAP that shows an overhead impression of your street and area exactly as it is. It depicts each property as a green square for none members and a red square for members. If you click on a red square it will show the members name. If the member has allowed street number, it will show that as well. So, if you click on a red square and it shows name only it's easy to work out the property number from it's MAP location on the street. In my view this is effectively giving away your property number. I complained bitterly to Nextdoor about this but got nowhere. It's fine if your happy for neighbours to know where you live. Sometimes in my area conversation threads have got quite nasty.

Facebook should have an IQ test before allowing people to join. The amount of people that add spammers and scammers is unreal.
Not only adding them but tagging their spammy scammy posts and comments as well.
Thats where a lot of the problems stem from. Facebook collecting data is just a given. What about their lies they could not link facebook
accounts with whatsapp accounts. Then shortly after they found a way to do it.. Yeah right as if that was not possible from the outset, but
the takeover had happened by then.
Its free for a reason. As mentioned above think of it as posting a message on the supermarket notice board. Would you post your name
and address and personal details on that?

What a load of garbage. Well, I created an account and got a better understanding of what it is and how people use it. It's mostly a platform for self-adulation. There are quite a few clubs etc that have their own private Facebook sites which is in line with how I want to use it so that's a good thing for me. Thanks for all your post.

I use Facebook via mobile browser, the app wanted far too many permissions for my liking, most of which seemed entirely unnecessary.
Make posts friends only, and turn on tagging approval. Your name will still appear on the post you've been tagged on, but declining the tag means it won't be clickable or appear on your own timeline.

I really miss NextDoors predecessor, StreetLife.
I declined Next door because of the identifiable location issues already described.
It's been that way since launch a few years ago, I'm disappointed but not surprised to learn it's the same now.0 -
KxMx, I still can't quote so, I agree about the app, I won't be using it. Thanks for the info on tagging. I don't plan on posting anything but I'll go through all the settings carefully. I'm just going to use it for my clubs etc, not the social side. I preferred Streetlife it got used much more than Nextdoor in my area.

You need better friends if the ones you have are engaged in self-adulation, so I suggest you unfriend . unfollow them so you stop seeing their self-adulation. I don't see any of that, but my friends on facebook are members of my family and people I know in real life, so I don't feel the need to do paranoid superspy ninja stuff like hiding my name.spudpie said:What a load of garbage. BTW to answer a question you asked earlier, if you post something using "Friends only" then your friends can't share it, nor can their friends see it. Although people that don't understand facebook privacy will tell you different because they heard it from a woman at bingo and her second cousin works at PC World selling printers so knows about this stuff, or something, If you tag someone in a post, their friends can see it as well as yours.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20233
