Annoying changes to security on Nationwide

Nationwide have recently started asking for card reader confirmation for transactions made on their mobile app. They insist that they have always done this but they have never done this on my account before. I used to pay my builder from the app for huge amounts. This is really annoying because it means I need to carry a card reader as well as a mobile phone. I don't know why they can not use a properly authenticated app or a mobile phone text confirmation like other banks.

Currently need my finger print, then log in credentials, then her sent a text message and then have to use a card reader.
Just to transfer £10 to a friend.
The world's gone mad.

Although I have a nationwide account I would recommend eg Monzo for day-to-day payments to friends etc. You can have fingerprint authorisation or just enter debit card pin authorisation.0

Thank the terminally stupid who regularly fell for the "this is your bank " phone calls or the "confirm your details " emails .
We now have greatly tightened security .

Will the use of a pin pad actually stop that type of fraud ? If a fraudster can persuade me to enter their bank details, surely they can persuade me to use the pin pad to authorize the transaction ?

I'd not been asked for card reader authorisation until very recently when I was paying to an account set up ages ago but not used for some months. Not having needed the reader for so long, I had not bothered to get a replacement when the old one ceased to work. About a week ago I requested a replacement. Still waiting though the website acknowledge request. (Yes, I know another bank's reader would work but one needs one that works!)

They have put this in place for the safety of their customers. I have a credit card and tried to log into their website to see my transactions and they have a new not where I get a number sent toy mobile and I have to type this in to get through. It's a bit of a hassle but I understand why especially these days.2

Are you anywhere near a Nationwide branch? The one here has a huge number of card readers on the premises for customers who need them. it may be that other banks that use them (e.g., NatWest) also keep them in branches. It'd be a bit cheeky to try it on with them if you're not one of their customers, but that might not stop you.

While annoying, I'm glad they've beefed up their security. I wasn't going to disclose it here until they eliminated the issue, but I discovered that if a customer held an Online Saver account, it was previously possible to log in using memorable information, change the linked account and immediately move a large sum of money to the new linked account. No extra verification and no alerts that the linked account had been changed.

Gullible maybe. My mother nearing 60 frequently asks me the same question...Mum: I got this email from my bank saying XYZ. Does it seem right to you?Me: Does it ask you to click a link?Mum: Yeah it does.Me: Delete it. Click nothing. It's trickery, like the last one was, like the one before that one was and like the next one will be.As i say, she's nearing 60 and not the best with technology. Dangerous perhaps. I forever tell her to click nothing. She seems to believe everything. Too gullible.Someone i work with who's mid 30s like myself surprisingly asked me recently, HMRC have sent me an email saying i'm due a refund. Does that sound legit to you?Me: No. They wont email you. I bet it asks you to click a link?Him: Yeah how did you know?Me: Been there, seen that, again & again. Never ever click these links.I'd have thought someone in his position would've been better but hey ho.The change in Nationwide security is annoying for me. I know that there's a positive side to it but for someone like myself, it's just annoying really. I'm glad i don't use them as my main account.0

It has become difficult. I only use the website to check the account balance but I now need a card reader for that. Our also broke a long time ago so my husband requested a new one. It arrived, but I've no idea where its gone (I've been doing a massive clearout and might have thrown it away by mistake). Its making it realy hard to manage my account so I'm thinking of closing it. All I want to do is it regularly view the balance so I can make sure we stop spending at the right time.
