Private School Fees

  • My school have announced fee reductions from the summer bill for all year groups, but substantially greater for Year 13 students. I feel that this is very generous and shows understanding of the situation many fee paying parents find themselves in economically. The school states that it divides its GCSE and A Level tuition costs across the 6 terms of academic study, hence the reason they cant cancel summer term fees- which is understandable. Also, all teaching are providing lessons remotely until the Government annouce how the exam grades will be calculated. My annoyance, however, is that this reduction on fees doesnt apply to staff who have children at the school, as it is deemed that their fee remission, as part of the contract, is sufficient. However, my children's education is being affected just as much as any other child, regardless of employment contract. Many staff have partners who have been effected economically as well. If i worked for VW when the emission scandal broke, would i have received compensation for owning a VW car ? If i worked for Hotpoint, and my washing machine/tumble dryer was one of the faulty batch, would i have received the same compensation as any other member of the public?

My daughter's school have discounted 25% across the board. To be honest she was only going to be in for a couple of weeks after Easter anyway plus going in to sit the exams. Teachers are still being employed and the school is still offering a place for key worker children. Teachers are still collating the evidence to support their grade recommendations for A level. We are getting the exam fees refunded.

Would it be out of place to ask you how much discount and what school you were offered?  Or at least what area?

My school have said similar things as others have mentioned:
    * They continue to provide online teaching (They have already STOPPED for Year 13, other than handing out Past Papers - that is NOT 'teaching'!)
    * They recommend students continue studying (I agree IF they are moving on to a degree subject the same, or similar to an A level.  Else it is just a waste!  I prefer my daughter to start studying towards her degree subject - the school cannot assist with that!)
    * They are not sure how Grades are to be assessed so the more work students do, the more that the school can use

I feel that they will hang on to this point - is almost blackmail.
Yet I guarantee that my daughter will be getting 98% in any past papers she decides to complete - they are able to do them in their own time, with the marking schemes and the answers.  (I'd allow her to drop 2 marks for typo errors.......)
