mobilephones direct offer with O2 24 mths with 60Gb plus unlimited calls and text for £40 pcm ( =£960) but with £396 mobilephonesdirect cashbacks claimed in 5 amounts, plus a separate £120 cashback from Huawei so a total of £516 cashback meaning that at the end of the contract it'd only have cost £434 whereas sim free price is much more and I'd have to buy data mins and text. Am I missing something?

You have to remember to claim the cashback right on time otherwise you lose out. Secondly, the P40 is due to be released later this month.

Alternatively, buy it from O2 using the Refresh scheme, buying the handset in full for under £300, claim the cashback from Huawei, cancel the contract straight away and then buy a sim only deal that suits you.

Thanks for p40 info , but re Refresh scheme I can't see where the £300 comes from. Best I see is pre built plan of £556.50 plus 1 month at £17.00 less the £120 cashback =£453.50

Apologies, it's the P30 that you can get for £189 using the method I outlined and not the Pro.
