Hi guys,

Hope you are all keeeping safe at this time.

My Car is due for its first MOT on 30th May.  I don't know what to do about this as I have an elderly relative that needs me to get his shopping.  Should I get the MOT done now in case we go into Lockdown or do you think I should be able to find a garage in early May?  What would others do?

If it gets to the situation where garages are shut down there is no way you will be allowed out to wander around the shops.

Get it done now and have one less thing to worry about.
It will only be valid 12 months, rather than to the end of May, but you can always get another done in June if you want to know the MOT is due by checking the date you bought the car.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

I have the same concern (but with a much older car). I'm assuming that the Government will allow extensions to existing certificates if we are on lock down.
  • Mine's due at the end of March but it's only booked in for next week as we have been on holiday.  Not using my car at the moment as working from home, so not sure whether to just ignore the MOT and leave it on the drive or try to see if I can get it done sooner.  I'm in London so if lockdown rumours are true then it won't happen next week.  Am also assuming some sort of extension will be granted if we are in lockdown so my instinct for now is to leave the appointment as it is and see what happens.

Just checking though - the rule still is it can be parked on a drive with no MOT if next time you drive it is to go straight to an MOT appointment, yes?

Then so will garages because the delivery vehicles and staff members will all need continuity of transport.

I'm happy to get an MOT, just trying to work out the consequences if I can't!  If London goes in to lockdown over the weekend, which is what we're being told, I suspect "getting an MOT for a car that's just going to sit on the drive" won't be considered essential, but I guess we'll see...

There's a very good chance that the government will allow exemptions if MOT centres are closed over the coming weeks/months. They've already done this in NI when all centres were forced to shut down earlier this year.
  • Your local independent garage is very likely going to be hurting badly at the moment due to a sharp drop in business. I know that's the case in my village. Book the car in for an MOT now and you'll be doing them a favour. Our towns and villages are going to be awful places when this is all over if a significant number of local shops and businesses have gone bust.
