Annual Travel Insurance expires

Options
Hi I’ve currently got annual travel insurance which expires at the end of March, I have already booked my summer holiday in France for July but I am unable to renew my travel insurance because of the Coronavirus and the insurance company not accepting renewals currently. Will I be covered under the old policy should I need to cancel due to FCO recommendation?

I would cancel and claim now before your insurance expires AS NO new insurance covers Covid now

I am in the same boat.

Two flights booked via Easy jet to Turkey at the end of May. My LV annual policy runs out mid April. Time is on my side I suppose but until the FCO is extended what can I do! Nothing as far as I can see.

Current policy will not cover you if you claim after the expiry date of the insurance.  The problem you may find is your holiday date being beyond the current 'do not travel' advice from the FCO.  Also check that the section of the policy covering cancellation due to FCO advice actually covers this situation as not all do.  Some only cover fire, flood, earthquake and hurricane cancellation.

I have an Annual Multi Trip insurance cover with Admiral. At this date, 13/04/20, it appears that re-newal is going ahead, albeit at over twice last year's premium. Do I assume that this hike in costs is the norm in the current circumstances?

Unless it is important to you that you have continuous cover with the same company (say for a pre-existing booking) then it would pay you to shop around for a better deal.

It's common practice for insurance companies to bump up their rates on renewal in the hope that you either don't notice, don't care or are obliged to stay with them.

If the renewal will include claims relating to COVID-19 then it'll be a choice of pay the higher price or get a cheaper policy which doesn't include claims relating to COVID-19, with possibly the exception of medical expenses if you are hospitalised with COVID-19 while abroad depending which policy you choose.
  • I have an annual travel policy with Staysure, which is due to expire for renewal at the beginning of July. If I renew ,will I be covered for Co ronavirus?my existing policy, doesn't specifically mention this as obviously Covid19 was not around in July 2019.

    From their website:
Travel insurance protects you from unexpected events – things that we can’t expect will happen. As the COVID-19 outbreak is no longer an unexpected event, then we would not provide any cover for claims caused by or related to coronavirus for any policy bought after 23:59 on 13 March.

Also it appears that if you didn't purchase the 'Travel Disruption Extension' upgrade as part of your existing policy then what coverage you currently have is limited due  a 'health outbreak' not being an inclusion: https://www.staysure.co.uk/discover/coronavirus-latest/
  • Hello - I currently have an annual travel insurance policy with AA. I've never bought an annual one before as I usually buy single cover, but we had three holidays booked this year so it was worth taking out an annual policy this time around. My holidays this year have successfully been cancelled without any cost implications or having to claim through insurance and my policy runs from March 2020 until March 2021.
I'm wanting to book a holiday for October 2021 (our honeymoon) but I'm not sure how annual policies work? If I booked this holiday in the next few weeks would my current policy cover this as the departure date is after the annual policy expiry date, or do I need to take out a new single trip policy for this holiday at the end of next year (which is currently hard to do due to COVID-19)? I wasn't sure if it would be covered also if we renew the policy next March either? Thanks!

Your  annual one  would cover you for a cancellation claim within the policy terms  until  March 21. It would not cover any cancellation made after the end  date of the policy.
You would then need to take out another policy to cover you from then.
