Economy 10

The flat I've moved into is electricity only (no gas) and has an Economy 10 meter, with power supplied by SSE. I was on a 2 year fixed tariff which has just expired. On my bills SSE states that I can change my supplier if I want to, but having phoned all of the other major suppliers, none of them will take on my Economy 10 meter. SSE informed me that they only currently have 3 tariffs available to me - a variable rate, a 1 year fixed rate or a 2 year fixed rate. I've gone for the 2 year fixed rate tariff again, but the costs per KwH on the new tariff are significantly higher than those on the old tariff.  Daytime units up from 21.81p to 22.71p, Night time units up from 11.54p to 14.47p, Storage Heating units up from 9.69p to 13.50p and standing charge per day up from 14.80p to 22.05p. My monthly direct debit payments have increased from £42 per month to £63 per month, a 50% increase!! I feel that I'm just being taken advantage of by SSE, and there is nowhere to go.  Does anyone have any suggestions please?

    Those are dreadful rates.
They are all more expensive than the Standing Charge 13.2825p per day and 12.11343p per kWh at all times that I'm paying with Neon Reef, although it's variable.
IIRC if you have a Restricted Hours Tariff such as E10 you are entitled to switch to a single rate tariff without a meter change.

The problem there is that these single rate tariffs are only available through a specialist team and are not in the least bit competitive.  Another OFGEM act before thinking scheme !

There have been numerous threads on this topic over the 12+ years you have been a member here, many of which I am sure you could locate using the search function if you require further information and advice, but in short:

Do not attempt to switch supplier with this type of legacy metering; attempts to do so invariably end in tears.

You have been offered 3 tariffs, which to be fair, is 3 times more than most customers on this type of legacy metering get offered.

In addition you may choose any single rate tariff offered by your current supplier if you wish.

Otherwise if you want to have a choice of suppliers, you will need to have your metering updated. Your supplier should be able to assist you further on this option if necessary.
