It's only two months ago that I did a big pantry sort out and threw out a number of things which were out of date. I quite fancy that 2010 rice pudding now. 😄Member #14 of SKI-ers club

There was no dried pasta and the only fresh pasta in the shop today was lasagne.
I was making seafood pasta for dinner. I simply cut the fresh lasagne into strips simple and tasty.
There was also no cooking oil so I bought a block of crisp and dry. I only needed it for Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes so it will be fine.
There were no eggs on the shelves but at the front of the shop they were being sold as singles. There were absolutely loads of them, but they were being missed.
There were also rtc cherry tomatoes in kilo bags for 25p, perfect for home made pasta sauce.
I also noticed big bags of basmati rice along with the indian spices. It's always worth having a look in the not so obvious places.7 -
Regarding earlier posts:Bread without yeast. You can make flatbread using yoghurt. Just Google it and you will get several recipes.Out of date spices. I was watching a TV programme a couple of weeks ago, A lady who was cooking an Indian recipe said that you should not throw out spices just because they are old. You just need to add more to the dish as they don't go off; they just lose some flavour.9

Here's my recipe for soda bread, any flour will do. Just mix all the ingredients together and bake in a lined loaf tin.
Soda bread
350 g flour
1tsp bicarbonate
pinch salt
280 ml milk
125 g yoghurt
1 tablespoon oil
Mix it together and bake in a loaf tin. 40 -45 mins

I sometimes make something like a paratha - just mix SR flour with water and maybe add a dash of olive oil. Mix to a dough, roll out not too thin and fry. SR flour gives a fluffier consistency. I sometimes put butter on it like bread. With a plain flour dough, I roll out thinner and cook till a bit crispy. Great for use with dips. You can add a bit of bite by scattering with cumin, chilli etc, maybe rub with a bit of garlic. There really is no need for half the supermarket convenience stuff and at least we know what is going in it!

I'm the opposite. Foodwise I'm limited to either what I can get online or what folks can pick up for me and find it works out more expensive. Can't pick and choose cheaper local options in person. Same goes with getting things like garden supplies online. It's nearly always more expensive than nipping to the diy store in town. With Amazon in particular, it's worth checking the average retail price of something. We've got plenty of red pesto and coconut milk as well, so we can have curries as I have an entire cupboard of rice, but same again - no pasta, what do I use the pesto for!
Try mixing the pesto with potato gnocchi - easy to make if there’s none in the shops, loads of recipes online. Or spread over a sheet of puff pastry, top with cherry tomatoes/ olives/ courgettes and bake for 25 minutes.4
