This is on my mind too. Booked holiday for after the period school told me, but now no idea if we will be covered if exams are moved!
Only paid deposit, but not had time to sort travel insurance, now impossible to call any of them!
You won't be covered if you don't have insurance, and any insurer is now going to exclude stuff like that on a new policy.

Nothing you can do except get insurance (which is a good idea anyway) and hope exams aren't delayed.

I see a different problem with exams

I do exam invigilating , the majority of the people who work with me are over 60 with underlying health issues. Regardless of the exams being on there may not be enough invigilator available to cover them .

  • Just a thought - is the official policy of local education authorities (some at least) that pupils should not be taken out of school during term time ?
Would insurance companies be able to use that to avoid paying out if flights and holidays etc. are cancelled to allow youngsters  to sit postponed exams ?

Possibly, yes.  Parents have for years taken their children away in term time during study/exam leave at the end of years 10-13, particularly in years 11 and 12, but term officially ends for all students at the published end of term dates.  It's not really an LEA thing any more because so many schools are academies, but most have simply copied the polices they operated under when they were funded by the LEA.  I'm a governor at a secondary school so this isn't hearsay.

It's always been a calculated risk (by parents) and of course it takes extraordinary circumstances for it to be a problem.  We're there now.

Schools were told to keep 24 June available as a contingency day (the 1st time I can remember this ever happening).  It wasn't clear if it was just that date or the days from the last exam until then.  This has firmed up now to be all days up to and including 24 June.  IMHO If exams have to be delayed beyond that point could there be a valid case for some form of compensation?

    Compensation? From whom?

No one's forcing families to take holidays and no one's forcing them to have their kids sit exams. If the holiday is that important, forego the exams.

Honestly, after the earlier post about compensation for a child no longer believing in Santa, this one's a close second for daftness.

I'd be a bit fed up if I specifically called a school to find out when it was safe to book my holiday, they gave me a date and then they later changed that date to a later date.  Just saying.

Yes, and we're in extraordinary circumstances.  Probably the most society-affecting period since WWII.  No school can be held as an authority on when you should be taking your holiday.

I think you'll have a lot more to be fed up about in the coming weeks.

I hate the word compensation. Someone's got to pay, and its ultimately out of our pockets. Compensation from a school? Jeez, what are you? American?
Insurance is one thing, but this whole scenario could not have been forecast, nor is it fair to try to hold anyone accountable.
