Keep existing car registration number

Hi, I am just about to purchase a new car and want to keep my existing registration number to put on my new car. The registration number is one that came with the car not one that I've purchased separately. Can anyone advise how I can do this?

Make sure you do the plate swap before you sell the old car - so you don't inadvertently lose the right to that plate. And if it's already advertised and the number is possibly desirable to anyone else make it clear in the ad that the plate is not included.
