Im a customs officer so I am allowed to carry them, the irony is we have higher security clearance than anyone on the airport and yet get put through a daily round of 20 questions, yet I also travel quite a lot and find the average BAA member of staffs attitude laughable to say the least.
Strapped you may find the wages of BAA staff are above the national average, knowing a couple of bods at STN and having seen their wage slips they do quite well considering the level of knowledge and skill that they require for the job, ie they are one step up from a tesco security guard, infact scrub that beacuse tescos security guards dont have armed police to protect them if it goes boobs up.

I have a flight booked for the 29th december , so i guess at risk of it being affected by strike action .
However i support anyones rights to take industrial action ,remember most of us wouldnt be in the position of affording holidays abroad had it not been for people willing to fight for the rights of ALL of us over the years .
We have turned into a nation of 'I'm all right jack '0 -
well said lesley........ bit of support at last. just a point bear its not all about security at an airport operations include baa fire service and ops that allow everything to keep on flying safely.......... high skill and knowledge .......0

by way in case everyones 4got this is about pensions ........ why is everyone talking about wages............. its the police who have the wage dispute and baa who have the pensions dispute. its not linked at all in fact baa normaly negotiaites a 2 or 3 year pay deals. all you need to concentrate on is our pensions being effected.0

Phatbear, all I can say is that from personal experience, the wages were not competitive with the same type of work elsewhere in the region. (I left for the same type of job paying 30% more and I know many of my collegues would also have left if they weren't in their fifties/late forties and felt obligated to "hang on" for their pension. Remember BAA has not always been a private company).
My job was not connected with security, but I did used to volunteer to test it on a regular basis posing as joe public so I can sympathise with your comments re. the actions of some security staff (although certainly not all). Glad to hear that they are on the ball and questioning you though - I have been known to slip airside on someone else's pass :eek:They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -

But I still don't understand why people think their week skiing in Aspen is more important than our quality of life during retirement.
I am a worried traveller after hearing news about these possible strikes. Me and my family from the Uk are booked to travel on the 29th Dec from Heathrow so may get caught up in it all (if it goes ahead). I really came on here to see if I could find out any more information than just the rediculous 5 sentences they give on the BAA website. I have been saving for a year now and to travel to Australia for New Years eve in Sydney and to visit my family in Tasmania who I have seen for years.
I came across posts on this board from Tony Mcqueen and it has really angered me how he goes on about what is so important about people missing a weeks skiing holiday? If I was going to spain for a short weekend I wouldnt worry as much but after saving all year, and to have the one chance to visit my family that doesnt come around very often it is to hard to bare thinking about it not happening. And also Tony said 'We have given enough notice' - what a load of ****. So obviously it is as simple as calling up the travel agent and swopping my flight to another day. If only it was.
I have everything crossed that the strike doesnt take place. I cant even understand how we have gotten to the stage where a ballot has taken place. The UK has become a place where when employs arent happy about something they just call a strike. No wonder so many companies are moving abroad! For gods sake BAA staff are striking about a pension scheme which affects NEW EMPLOYEES ONLY.
If anyone has any further information about the strikes please post it here. I would be very grateful.0 -
mooeyitfc....... i understand your frustrations but i find it frustrating that u have either not read all the posts or chosen to be blinkered into not believing them. will try and clarify this for the last time ....... closing the final pension scheme to new employees is the first step to closing it altogether. therefore it effects everyone. as ive already stated the facts are that the pension is in a very healthy position and has been voted as being in the top 2 or 3 pension schemes in the country. so why change something thats not broken? your comment about companies moving abroad is quite ironic because a spanish company recently bought baa and so now runs heathrow gatwick stansted etc. they bought the company at great expense to line their pockets with big profits. but 1st the debts of buying baa need to be paid and where do you think they start 1st? suggest you aim your letters to a mr stephen Nelson.......... rumour has it this was his fab idea. all i can tell you is that this will definately be a yes vote for strike action.0

Basic maths. I'm not sure why people don't get this eitherThey deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -
mooeyitfc - you made my point exactly.... you've been saving for a year, and, I'm sorry you're involved but if we let BAA steal our pension then it will effect the rest of our lives.
- you claim somehow that your latest HOLIDAY is somehow more important than the quality of our lives till the days we die is laughable.
BAA make enough money that they could fund the final scheme pension. They are not poor and make millions of pounds profit every day from our sweat. Your holiday could happen again at any time just by BAA doing the honourable thing.
I believe the good English public is behind us, and If you put yourself in our shoes you'd feel the same.
And if not, don't come crying here if your employer starts to push you around.0 -
The good English public will have to hope they don't get stranded at Glasgow or Edinburgh then with some less than impressed Scots
I am flying to see family at Christmas and have thankfully booked the return flight for the 26th. Whilst I think the loss of final pension schemes is a terrible shame, I am not sure striking is the way forward. It didn't help the postal workers.0
