I service my car every two years,i do less 2500 miles every year and use good quality oil and filters,as its an 54 plate it does not make that much difference.

Many thanks to you all for replying, some really useful feedback :)
As predicted, you all suggested getting a service; I've never neglected a service since I bought the car, and was always leaning towards putting it in for a service this year as I think it's the most sensible option.
The main reason why I asked the question is because I am thinking of getting a replacement in the near future, so if I were to part ways with the Polo in say 6 months time, the value of the car with or without the service may not be justified by the cost of service, if that makes sense?!
Like some of you suggested, I think i'll look into servicing myself; I 'check' the companies fleet of vehicles so I half know my way round a car, but there's always the internet if I get stuck haha
    Thanks again,
    Oli

Many cars require extra servicing if doing low mileage as they assume lots of short journeys which knackers the oil quicker.

The prices you mention seem to suggest main dealer servicing, there are cheaper places that are as good where you can get your car serviced. Definitely worth looking around and if your car is running fine then pay for the service and save any spare cash into a "new car fund" ready for when it does die.

Only if you ignore the more major effect of maintenance - to extend reliability and service life, both of the car itself and of individual components of it.
