Opinions needed - is it worth servicing my car?
Afternoon all,
Just a quick query from me -
My yearly servicing date is coming up for my 2005 1.4 S Polo. It's currently my everyday car, where i'm driving it most days for 9000 miles year, and to this day I have had absolutely no issues with it what-so-ever. The engine has been sound for the 6 or 7 years I have been driving it, and bar a couple of instances of re-aligning the tracking and sorting the bearings, it's been a joy to have. I'm planning to drive this car to the ground, and pass it on once something in the engine gives way, either to the scrap man or for spares and repairs on eBay. Do you kind people think it is worth putting through a service? The value of the car suggests it's not worth it, but with only 90,000 miles on the clock there should be plenty of life left in the engine, which leaves me torn between forking out a couple of hundred quid for the service or letting fate run it's course if it does eventually die on me in the near future.
What do you lot think? As an FYI, my insurance renewal is at the end of this month, as is it's MOT (£35) and tax (£175?!), and it's also in need of a couple of new tires at the rear.
Would be hugely appreciative of any feedback! Many thanks,
Oli

It is always worth servicing your car especially as it is not giving you any issue. 90k is not a lot for modern cars nowadays. By servicing it, you can get even many more years from it. If you don't service however, you will likely reduce its useful life. Your next car may not be this reliable even if newer with low mileage.

By service, all you should do each year is an oil and filter change (oil/air/pollen). Plus the spark plugs once every 4-5 years. You should be able to get this done for under £100 (although it's a fairly easy DIY job for anyone you know with decent car maintenance skills). It will ensure your car lasts longer. Neglecting the oil changes will accelerate your car's demise. Neglecting the air filter will increase your fuel consumption.

Similar position to you, my car 55 plate only has 80k on the clock I've decided to see how my car gets through MOT before servicing.
I'd love a newer car but can't really justify it when this one gets me from a to b.

I'm confused - unless your selling it soon, or it has something seriously wrong, why would you even contemplate not servicing it?
Regularly servicing is the cheapest option you have to increase the reliability of your car.
You say you want to keep it for many years yet your not sure if you should service it? So it you didn't get it serviced, you would just run it into the ground without ever changing the oil, filters, checking brakes etc?4 -
Of course you should service it!
You're doing 9k/year in it - nearly 200 miles every working week of the year. An annual service is cheap insurance against expensive failures.
If it does fail, on a Monday morning on your way to work in the peeing rain, how are you going to get to work for the week? Are you going to get it fixed, or are you going to throw it away and replace it? How much time will that take? And that's ignoring that it'll cost far more than simply servicing the car you have now...0 -
On my 2nd older car, I have an engine oil & filter change with the MOT and change easy stuff occasionally myself like air & pollen filters0

In answer to your post......yes

The one thing I try and instill in my kids, if you do nothing else change oil and filter every year even if you are feeling skint.0

It’s always got to be worth servicing your car, as others have said, at least an oil and filter change annually, you could even do it yourself and save a bit more, you tube will show you how, it’s not difficult and immensely satisfying to carry out your own servicing..0

It will be due a cambelt change. That is something you should do to extend longevity, unless you are happy to use the car and if it fails say goodbye to the car.0
