Top places to live in Leicestershire

Hi guys,

I wanted some local knowledge/expertise on what the best area may be to settle down long-term? Priorities would be safety, local amenities (cafés, shops, parks, groups) , community vibe, young families, professionals and good schools. I don't want to move to an area and regret it. Obviously I am checking out the areas of the houses I view but I wanted to speak to people of a good know-how of Leicestershire and see what their thoughts are.

What areas would you definitely choose and which areas would you definitely avoid and why?

Your help would be much appreciated,

Thank you

Can you be a bit more precise - where do you want to be near? What sort of prices?  Leicestershire includes a wide range of very different places.
  • I live in Leicestershire so might be able to help. My preference is on the west or north side which is closer to Bradgate park, found most of the villages around this area to be really nice. Rothley is a popular choice as its a nice village with plenty going on, and there's been a wave of new builds recently so plenty of property to choose from. On the west side, Anstey/Groby/Kirby Muxloe are all pretty decent with a bit more going on that some of the smaller villages.

There's plenty of places to avoid - New parks, Beaumont Leys and Braunstone being probably the biggest areas, but if you have specific areas in mind let me know and I might be able to help.

Market Harborough and surrounding area is said to be quite good. There are some very pretty villages near the Rutland border
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Hi there
I guess there's that vagueness because we're open to areas. Price range up to 350k for a detached property with minimum 3 beds. Just want to be in a good, young and safe community. Local cafes/restaurants,shops/boutiques and green spaces would be nice.

The list of areas we've drawn up for potential house searches are:
    Market harborough
    Melton mowbray
    Barrow upon soar
    Woodhouse eves
    Anstey
    Ashby de la zouch
    Rothely
    Quorn
    Mount sorrell
    Sileby
    Nanpanton
    Lutterworth
    wigston
Any areas to add to this or to avoid? We want an area to settle down and to live with future kids etc and not need to go far for local groups/shops/etc. Safety is a priority, so is good schools.

You may struggle to find a family home in Nanpantan or Woodhouse Eaves for that price.  I don’t know Lutterworth or Wigston well, but all the other areas are fine.  Just do the usual trips round, as every area has the odd street you may find less desirable. Good luck with the house hunting.

You mention "good schools". Good schools can become bad and bad schools become good within a matter of a few years. Similarly certain types of shops can appear or disappear within a few years.

What do you think of Melton mowbray? I've heard that it may not be so nice as an area?
