Hey all, I hope someone can help with this slow laptop! It's not mine though. My Dad showed me that it is running on CPU 100% and said to delete some programmes, I deleted loads and still nada. It's got a low memory, something silly like 256MB but I'm sure there's a way to make it under the CPU 100% thing.
I just downloaded the free AVG Virus software as I connected to the internet today and don't want any problems. Besides that I just have the usual Windows programmes.
Here are some programmes I could possibly delete but am not sure if I actually need them:
ATI Control Panel & Display Driver - 8.94MB (think might need this)
DivX Web Player - 3.9MB
JS2E Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3 - 117.00MB (what is this???)
QuickTmie - 70.12MB
Rugby 2001 - 181.MB - I have tried many times to remove this one but an error message comes up and it wont let me.
If there is any thing else I can do please let me know, like how to make internet quicker etc. And if you need any other specs that's fine

Lightbulb Moment: The bulb has been flickering on and off for a year now but I decided to calculate my debt on 13 March 2007.....whilst procrastinating!
My total debt does not include Student Loan as I will not have to start paying that off for a few years yet.
According to 'Snowball Calculator' my Total Debt as of March 2007 is: £6,281.33
Also according to snowball calculator if I 'snowball correctly' I will be debt-free in 73 months, so in October 2010. However according to the big table of repayments it creates, my last payments will be in April 2013...slightly confusing???

You should look inside task manager to find out the process that is hogging the CPU. Open task manager, click on processes, then click the cpu column - this sorts by cpu use low to high, click it again it will sort high to low and bring the offending process to the top.
Don't try to uninstall those programs you've listed above yet, we need to find out the resource hog.
Post it back here whne you've found it.0 -
Well there definately seems to be just one thing using it all up, as everything else seems to be on CPU usage OO! It says Image name: spoolsv.exe and the user name is SYSTEM. Its flickering between about 85-98% CPU usage!

Do you have any print jobs that can be cancelled? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks Nikolai, that has removed the print spooler thing from eating up my CPU usage. I don't even have a printer so hopefully it won't happen again!
Am I ok to delete any of those programs or should I leave them? My computer is still very very slow you see, but perhaps that's because its a bit cr** hhaha.Lightbulb Moment: The bulb has been flickering on and off for a year now but I decided to calculate my debt on 13 March 2007.....whilst procrastinating!

Sounds like the computer has crashed whilst printing resulting in a corrupt file.
You will get LOADS of (almost) blank pages with spurious characters when you print.
Stop the process.
Open the Printers folder and delete the print from the queue.
Restart the computer.0 -
Programs have no effect on speed unless they are running.
You need some more ram. https://www.crucial.com/ukEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
just out of interest I have;
IMAGE NAME-System Idle Process
USER NAME-System
CPU-99
MEM USAGE - 16K
Is this normal or what? All other things seem to be 00 CPU

Idle process means idle, ie spare capacity, so it's normal, your processor isn't being stressed at all (currently)Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
