  • Do you realise that worldwide, using yesterdays numbers, Sars-CoV-2 has killed just 0.06% of the number that have died from Flu this season.
    I keep hearing this one.

Makes me think of those who say flying is safer than driving as there's more accidents/deaths with driving than there is with flying.

Tis of no consolation to those who died in that plane though.

If all the money that has been removed from equities, gets returned into the market once Coronavirus settles down, the prices would return to where they were, right?
In fact, prices would become higher, as ontop of the money reentering, you have the warren buffetts of the world who were previously sat on a large cash pile who have doubtlessly been buying during the downturn.

  • Is it still advisable to continue drip feeding in? I don’t need the money for at least 30 years and have an emergency fund in cash already. I’ve been adding money in weekly, currently 10.4% down which doesn’t worry me but the potential of a recession worries me a bit

Absolutely yes. The whole point of drip feeding is not to worry about when to buy. Markets are down - does that mean you can pick up a bargain or does it mean they will keep falling? It could be either. With drip feeding you don't care, your purchases will average out, some will turn out to have been at a good time and some not. If you start holding off now you are back to trying to time the market.

Probably. It depends how much damage is done to businesses. Profitability will be hit this year, and if it causes businesses to fail (eg FlyBe) they won't be bouncing back.

Some recessions take a long time to recover from. My personal view is once the virus is gone and people return to work I see no reason why supply and demand won't return to normal levels, but I'm sure others will disagree.

My pension is down almost 20% since last month, oh well, units are cheaper...and I am due to buy more in a day or two.  My S&S ISA is down about 11% as well. Not pretty reading for my quarterly net worth update, but it will go up again....

Stop torturing yourself, it will go up, it will go down and it will go up. You knew this sort of market reaction to something was possible and likely when you started investing so what's changed?
Markets will go up eventually, just resist the temptation to check your account every day or what seems like every few hours given some of the other posts. If you can, just forget about it, stick to the plan.

I do a similar end of month 'net worth baseline' and this correction, plus the accelerated losses by tilting further into equities as it gets worse is pushing our net worth back months - backing out both recent gains and retained earnings. Still in the long term I am confident this is the best approach.

However to offset this reduction our planning permission was just approved to build another 2 large double bedrooms and convert the smallest single bedroom into an another ensuite which has probably added tens of thousands on our house value. It only cost around £250 to apply (inc OS map licencing) and we designed it using old AutoCAD 2000 on a Windows XP virtual machine with a freeware PDF virtual plotter.
