So my DH has a sains bank credit card 0% card. Over the last few months he has paid circa £600 23rd december, £500 27th jan & £400 1st March. The balance is around 2k and the minimum payments are £20 odd quid.
He got a letter today saying he has failed to meet the contractual min payments and so was in arrears. When he phoned them they said it was because the payments were before a statement was issued and therefore didn't count towards the minimum payment (payments were due on 20 Jan, 21st Feb)
Can he do anything about this? The person he spoke to today said it will show on his credit file and he has lost the 0% aspect of it. (& I know he should have set up a direct debit for the minimum payments and overpaid on top, but I often pay my credit card before the statement and it doesn't work that way for me)
Thanks for any advice

  • I had something like this as well with Sainsbury's funnily enough.  I resolved it by ringing them and they could see that I was 'too eager' making a payment and they eventually resolved it.

Thanks, he spoke to a different person today and they basically said the same thing and have sorted it, removed the late charge and made sure it won't go on his credit record

I had an issue with Sainsbury's. I got a 0% card from them and set up a DD for the monthly payment. I had a letter from them confirming it was in place and had been set up, in the 'amount to be taken' box it said £0.00 but I assumed that this was because a minimum payment hadn't been calculated yet.I had a letter to say that the payment had not been made, I was being charged a fee and would now lose my 0% deal! I contacted them to be told that I needed to make the first payment manually- this was not stated anywhere and I think it's a common issue as they immediately refunded the fee and the 0% deal. However it has left a mark on my credit file so I was fuming.

No advice, but I had a credit card with Sainsburys and had quite a few issues with them. When the balance got down to about £500 I paid it off and closed it. Would never go back with them

I've had this with Virgin. They decided to issue the statement a day later for no apparent reason, meaning the payment I made on payday as usual counted as paid the month previously, despite me already paying earlier in the month. I realised when they started hounding me with missed payment calls and texts so paid the minimum again to stop it being marked on my file. Think this is common with a lot of credit cards, so best to keep your eye on the dates they use!

This is why you pay vis DD for min and top up the day it comes out if it's not pay in full and you want to.

I mean come on ity's not hard. Many CC's havea 30 day month and dates change. Some others are even odder.

But people paying differing amounts month to month don't always use DDs in case they can pay more/less in a given month. That's what I do, being self employed and having varying pay. I don't think it's a case of being foolish if credit card companies change dates month to month and someone accidentally pays a little early.

Safer to set up the minimums by DD and then top up or snowball with an additional payment in my opinion, the facility is there, why risk it ?

This is where you set up a minimum payment DD as your safety net, then you can still top up the payment as and when you would do normally

Yeah, I can see that. Different things work for different people, I guess. I'm a bit compulsive in that I like to do it all manually so I can keep track of figures. Always worked out for me.
