PIP back pay - New claim

  • So to clear something up.
When you make a 1st PIP claim, and get the letter stating what you will be getting. Do you also get this backdated from when you started the claim?
Ongoing claim at moment, and I thought that it was not backdated.
It’ll be a back payment to the day you made the telephone call to claim no earlier than that.

    HI. Thanks.
Had to ring to chase as not heard anything. Advised 6 weeks timescale from assessment to decision at moment.
So did ask about back pay. Was advised it would be back to start of claim. Lady did mention at start of call to check the website for any questions you have, then back tracked to say its useless, when I said I had looked but could not find the answer :)
I really feel for people that need the funds given the length of time the whole claim process takes. 4 months really is a joke.

You’ll have to ring DWP to see if they can tell you.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

With the current postal issues I wouldn’t rely on that.

Of course you will only receive backdated money if awarded successfully. I wouldn't excpect the decision letter by Wednesday, although if awarded money usually goes into your bank before you receive the letter.
  • When they give you your backpay (if your claim was successful, of course), in the letter that follows it will tell you they've paid you for the weeks from the beginning of your claim up to a certain date. Your next payment will likely be 4 weeks after that date.

My backpay was from the beginning of my claim to the day before the decision was made, so the first payment was basically 4 weeks after the decision. It took almost a week for the backpay to go into my account and the letter arrived after it. I don't know if every claim works like that though because mine was awarded after an MR, not the first assessment.

If you weren't transferring from DLA then it's backdated to the date you first rang to start your claim off. Otherwise there's no backdated money.
Usually payment is received before you receive the letter, so if you weren't transferring from DLA then i'd ring PIP to ask.

What happens if you are moving from DLA to PIP?
The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer - I was in my late 20s when I figured out what this meant.

I neither take or enter agreements which deal with interest. I dont want to profit from someone's misery.

If you are moving from DLA to PIP there is usually a delay of several weeks before the new PIP replaces the DLA award. I can’t recall the exact details at the moment.

  • The DLA will have a 4-week run-on.
After that you usually wait 5 weeks for your first Pip payment because DLA is paid 1 weeks in advance and 3 weeks in arrears, where PIP is paid totally in arrears
