 Very pleased to hear your good news.

You have to wait at least two years I think before you can buy under the right to buy.

Looking on the York council website it seems you have to be a public sector tenant for five years now (from January this year). The best thing to do is look at a website for or contact your local council to see how the rules apply in your area.

However, I've just looked at Lewes website and it is two years if you were a tenant before 18th January 2005, so it seems that the five year rule applies to new applicants only.

    The worlds gone mad.!

Everyone has a right to free housing, at the taxpayers expense, in the location of their choice!

Be careful. viktory had her post deleted earlier, for suggesting that the rush to buy the property is somewhat obscene given the s'not fair attitude the OP had to the council not immediately giving her what she wanted presumably because they didn't have it because they have all been sold off!!
I think local authorities should offer tenants an interest free loan to pay the deposit on a house in the private sector, rather than allow the housing stocks to vanish completely.

....for your support Krisskross. What really annoyed me about having the post deleted was that no one had the common decency to tell me that the post had been deleted and why.

As far as I am concerned, it was not abusive. It was merely my strongly held opinion that the OP was using the same system that she had previously complained about - that is that there is little housing stock left, hence her long wait for suitable housing and as soon as a property does become available she plans on buying it at a greatly reduced rate! This perpetuates the social housing stock shortage.

An alternative plan might be to use the grants to vacate scheme (if in operation in her area) whereby the council gives a certain sum for tenants to vacate the property and buy in the private sector. Of course this does mean that the full price has to be paid for the property. However, social housing stock would not be further depleted.

    Great Plan
I love your thinking - buy the house you have waited so long for and desperately wanted. Deprive future generations of social housing. Further deplete council stock. As long as you get what want eh?
