Car stolen with spare key in it

I am devistated my brand new car has been stolen from home & insurance company are saying they won’t pay anything as I left the spare key in the document wallet inside the glove compartment. I only did that as the car dealer who I bought the car from 6 weeks ago advised me to invade I was out & lost my fob key. I have no witnesses to this conversation but I honestly thought I was doing the right thing by following advice from a ‘reputable car dealer’. I was not aware that this action would invalidate my insurance 😢. Please could anyone give me some advice.

It seems harsh to deny the claim if the spare key was not used to drive the car away. If the thieves broke into your house and stole the fob key, the spare key is immaterial. If the spare key was used to drive the car away, I think you might find that no one will take responsibility for your loss, so you will get nothing back. The advice to leave the key in the car was bad advice but you took it.

Most car insurance policies have a clearly worded exclusion to say that they won't pay for a theft if you leave the key in the car. If you name the insurer we can check that the exultation is clear in their documents, but I wouldnt get my hopes up.
Even if you could prove that the dealer advised you to leave your key in the car (why on earth would anyone advise you to do that?) I can't see how that would override the terms of your insurance policy.
Where were you relative to the car at the time it was stolen?0 -
It was certainly an insane thing to do.
Assuming your insurance policy states not to leave your keys in your car, as you'd expect, I can't see you having any joy with this.0 -
Please don't say the v5 was in the document wallet with the spare key.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0

Thanks all for your replies. The insurance company is Hastings. I was in my house when the car was stolen. It was parked just around the corner as there was flooding on my car & I didn’t want it to get damaged! I still have the V5 document.0

Could this be construed that the engine had to be running as well....
Theft of or damage, if the Car Keys that unlock or start your Car were left in or on it or unattended with the engine running

I don't think so - I'd read that as three different scenarios in which there will be no cover - a) if the keys are left in it b) if the keys are left on it and c) if the car is left unatttended with the engine running

So, do you know how the car was tolen?
And, has the car been recovered?
