Do I Have To Sign...?

Hello,
Apologies if this has already been covered but I'm wondering, what is the process exactly when returning a hire car? The reason I ask is when I took my car back last year (Sicily), I was asked to 'sign for it' after the routine inspection. I had the little matter of reclaiming errant fuel charges with much help from forumites eDicky and EveryWhere - thanks again guys. It seems strange that I should be signing for anything when returning a hire car - or am I being paranoid?
Answers on a post-card please...
Elston.

Never known that before but could you not use it to your advantage. In this situation I might be tempted to write on the paper being presented that the car has been returned at the correct time/date, to the correct location, fuelled to the correct level and with no damage - then also ask the rental agent to sign. Westin,Good idea. What I signed however was one of those PDA things - similar to those devices most couriers use these days when making deliveries. It's my guess that I was actually signing my consent for them to make the deduction but didn't suspect that then. I'll know better next time. Thanks for the reply.Elston.0
