    PPR - 40%
    DC pension - 27% ( +1 active DB pension and 2 deferred )
Work SIP - 14% ( a lot less than it was with all this market chaos going on, though I'm sure it'll recover eventually )
    S&S ISA - 7%
Premium Bonds - 7% ( probably partly be going into S&S ISA soonish )
    Cash - 5%

I think there's something to be said for having a significant amount in both pension and ISA

If you are ( or were ) a 40% taxpayer + employer contributions , then pension beats ISA hands down and worth forgoing the greater flexibility of an ISA.

For your survey , surely you need to include a 5th category - CASH !

yes - 40% tax payers and both DH and I contribute via salary sacrifice to save the NI too. His employer even gives him the employer NI savings. We are aiming to retire early at 58ish (now 52).

    S&S ISAs:50%
    PPR (Net): 28%
    SIPPs:16%
    PBs:3%
    Unwrapped Investments: 2%
    Cash:1%
  • With 9 answers to my survey, the average (mean) MSEer has the following percentages in each tax wrapper:
    PPR 35%
    Pension 33%
    ISA 20%
    Unwrapped 7%
    Tax Free NS&I 3%
    Work SIP 2%

Looking at the data another way, the average (median) MSEer has:
    Pension 39%
    PPR 38%
    ISA 19%
    Unwrapped 5%
    Tax Free NS&I 3%
(those numbers add up to 104% — not an error, just how medians work)

    So, similar answers either way.
For most people, their biggest category is either PPR or Pension; only Linton had most in an ISA (and only Linton and I had a bigger ISA than Pension).
Very little (less than 10%) is Unwrapped. We have some very generous tax shelters in the UK (and that's without mentioning the various allowances / 0% rates / lower rates for Unwrapped investment income / gains).

    Pension  25%
    ISA       30%
Unwrapped 30% Mix of equities, cash, NS inc PBs and gold.
Also have DB Pension and some other non liquid assets not included in above. Well some of them are liquid in one sense!

I was going to include my ESOP too as a novelty tax wrapper, but thanks to this week's market gyrations the value of that to the nearest pct is now 0%!

Apparently, I have the highest % of unwrapped assets so far. I blame most financial derivatives aren't available in ISA and pension, so I had to keep them unwrapped.

    This is not investment advice.
Your money may go "down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... I got all tricked up and came up to this thing, lookin' so fire hot, a twenty out of ten..."

    No residential property asset?

  • Unwrapped 30% Mix of equities, cash, NS inc PBs and gold.

I'm counting Tax Free NS products (PBs and Saving Certificates) as a separate tax wrapper, if you feel like giving a separate percentage figure for that.
I suppose if your gold happens to be in a CGT-exempt form, that would also be a separate tax wrapper (if it amounts to at least 1%!).
