Redundancy of role due to restructure

Hoping you can help as I'm stressing! My husband was informed at the beginning of the year that his job role would no longer exist following a department restructure. In the new structure his duties would make up 25% of 2 new roles and 80% of 1 role. This restructure would only impact him and his two colleagues who job share to cover a 24 hour shift pattern. My husband applied for the new roles which was advertised out internally to all and up against 8 people. He was unsuccessful due to lacking 'man-management' skills whereas his other two colleagues were successful.
I am now very concerned about what job he will end up with - is there any guidelines of what job the company supply him? he has been told he has to apply for the roles available but these are below his current role? He has worked hard for this company for 12 years and this has knocked him hugely. I feel he has been completely walked over and they are making him think he should accept whatever they give him even if it's scrubbing the toilets at this rate.
