Hi,

My daughter was born last week. We registered her birth today and will phone Child Benefit later today to confirm the changes.

Do I need to contact Child Tax Credit? As I understand it, as she is our third child, we will not receive any CTX for her. Could somebody please confirm this? Do we need to let them know regardless?

Many thanks.

I would suggest it is sensible to tell them anyway.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • I would definitely inform them as once the eldest child reaches 18 then they are no longer counted but subsequent children are so you will still be able to claim for two children.
  • Thanks for the comments.

I have updated this through my online account. Am I right in thinking that this does not trigger a move to Universal Credit?

Since we're on the subject of new births and tax credits, new and expecting parents should look into the new Qualified Birth and Adoption Distribution that went into effect January 1.  This really should only be used in emergencies, but since the unemployment rate is sky high, it's worth noting.  The basic concept is each new parent can withdraw up to $5,000 from their qualified retirement plans (401(k)/IRA) without IRS penalty after the birth or adoption to pay for expenses.  This is $5,000 each, $10,000 per couple, and applies to each child born or adopted.

Do they pay for child tax for a 3rd child if the 1st child was born before a certain date

If you're no longer claiming for the 1st child because they are no longer in full time non advanced education then yes you can claim for the 3rd child.
