HMRC not paying out on second claim

So, last year 2019 I was blessed with two successful PPI claims. HMRC refunded me the tax on the first claim but, they will not on the second claim. Could this be that you can only make one claim in each tax year. Any advice will be appreciated. It makes my blood boil that they can take but are reluctant to give back.

If you want anyone to help you might be better saying which tax year the claims related to.  Based on the limited information you have given (maybe this is the problem with HMRC if you are so vague?) was it,

    Two PPI payouts in 2018:19?

    Or

    Two PPI payouts in 2019:20

    Or

One PPI payout in 2018:19 and one in 2019:20?
  • Thank you. No it was two PPI payouts in 2019.

    Let's try again.

    Were the payouts,

Both made from 1 January 2019 to 5 April 2019

    Or

Both made from 6 April 2019 to 31 December 2019

    Or

One in the period from 1 January 2019 to 5 April 2019 and one in the period 6 April 2019 to 31 December 2019.

Secondly in the tax year(s) in question were your taxable wages/pension income more than £18k?

It would also help to know the amounts of interest as you are only allowed £1000 tax free if a basic rate taxpayer but £500 if higher rate.
    Why did HMRC reject?
  • One interest payment was £110 the other £119. They paid out on the first but not the other. I may take a chance and submit the second claim again in the new tax year.

Not really sure why you have posted on here.  People are happy to help but you are giving minimal help for us to be able to help you.

In theory if the total interest was £229 then you would be highly likely to be due all of the £45 tax back.

Submitting yet another form isn't the answer.  What exactly did you submit and what exactly have HMRC said.

If you have been as evasive with them as with us it's no wonder you are having problems.
  • Right the period is from 6th April 2019 to 31 December 2019.
My wages are more than £18k a year.

Then unless you need to complete a Self Assessment return for the 2019:20 tax year or have more than £221 in untaxed interest from other sources such as (non ISA) bank and building society accounts I would expect you to be due the full £45 back.

I am a bit surprised that you have received a refund at all given that the tax year in question hasn't finished yet.  What tax year did you complete the first R40 for?  If you didn't complete an R40 how did you make the initial and second claim?
  • I completed the R40 form for both claims, (let me explain) one was for RBS which they paid out on earlier in the year, and the other for Barclays late December. Now when I submitted the second, HMRC said that I had been payed.  When I explained this was a second claim for Barclays I submitted the paperwork and was refused.
Sorry if it sounds confusing do you think there's just been an admin error.
  • What did you declare on the second R40, the second payment of £119?
