How do I get out of the treadmill: work, commute, family?

I've not done this myself but know someone who did. Whilst the kids were young, It was great for them. More time together, slower pace of life, more time outdoors. However once the kids grew up, they ( the kids) moved away as there were no job opportunities. The parents were then on their own. Then you need to think about life once you age. Can you access the shops / healthcare etc? My nan lived in Cornwall and didn't drive. She was pretty isolated due to a lack of transport. In the winter the town was deserted and many businesses seasonal. Just think ahead. Will you still be happy there in 10 or 20 years? Will you have the means to move back if needed? Or could you change your job now? I've recently started a job working from home. Previously I was commuting 2 hours a day. I'm paid less now but I'm so much happier. My work life balance is good now and it's made so much difference.0

One thing to remember, is that most commuters pay to commute out of net income. Many get an interest free loan from employer and that's deducted from net pay. Some commutes are so expensive, that sort of arrangement incurs capital gains tax. Husband decided to get a job locally when commute became more expensive than our mortgage. Pay wasn't as good, but no commute meant he was better off.0
