    At various times and in various situations people here will urge you to take 'proper' advice - this is the kind you pay for, on the grounds that you can then sue the pants off the person who gave it if it turns out to be wrong. I do it myself quite regularly in other contexts, not so often on this board. 

    You are paying your solicitor to give you 'proper' advice. Their advice is to go for a separation agreement: signed, sealed, watertight. 

    Your ex, from your description, is not a gentleman, not someone on whom you might be able to rely to 'do the right thing'. 

    By all means ask your solicitor what possible bad things might happen if you don't take his advice, but me, I'd take his advice and consider it money well spent to be finally, utterly, set in stone rid of the guy.
