Mobile Phone Unlock Sites - Are any trustworthy?
Hello all,
Newbie here. Just wanted to ask if anyone has ever had a positive experience using some of the online mobile unlocking websites?
I recently used Direct Unlocks (directunlocks.com) and it turned out to be a nightmare. The website and process looks straightforward, however it's just a scam to lure you in. I paid £17.99 to have my phone unlocked only to have them email me the next day saying that I needed to pay a second/final charge to complete the unlock process. The hilarious thing is that the email also states the there is no guarantee this will be the "final payment" required.
I contacted the company and asked for a refund as I thought that was quite devious. They responded saying that the work in a two stage process, that I had paid for the first stage only and that it was non-refundable.
Let me be clear... at no point is there any mention of a "two stage process" nor is it clearly called out anywhere that each stage has an associated cost.
I have now re-checked every screen and sure enough they do call out a second charge... except that it is in tiny light grey writing below the big bold TOTAL = £17.99 so it is very easy to miss/overlook. I simply assumed the the "total" was what I had to pay... as is the case with almost every other website.
I've now read the trust pilot reviews (too little too late) and the company seems to offer a good service to some people and a terrible service to others.... the worst story seeming to be a guy that ended up having to pay over £120 spanning several months before getting his phone unlocked.
Apparently this is how most of the online mobile unlock websites work. I don't think any of them are totally honest about the total price. I am happy to be proved wrong and someone can tell me if they've had a good experience.
On a side note, I read Martin's guide (too late again) and it definitely appears that going via the network provider is the best. Or the small independent mobile repair shop down the road unlock phones for £30... at least they're honest about their prices.
