Yep, perhaps he should have given more information. But not everyone is eloquent and able to express feelings as others.

And no, its not rocket science. Its just the way the posters have done it. Benefit help with a link to a job vacancy site is just taking the rise.

Like I said, its not kind, its not showing empathy, and if you look at the Forum Etiquette, it says:

"Pls be nice to all MoneySavers"

That isn't much to ask, is it?

Getting a second job or increasing hours is good, common sense advice. It's the quickest, easiest and most straight forward way of increasing income.

If you're looking for empathy, then I can offer it. I've often worked more than one job at once to make ends meet. It's what normal people do

My son usually only works 20-24 hours, this was after three years of unemployment, he was glad to get the job.

He doesn't claim any benefits but there are reasons why it has been hard for him to get a job. and reasons why at the moment he only works part-time. How do you know the OP isn't the same?

Anyway, Martin says this board is for benefits advice, not judgement. See the sticky thread.

Gale i can honestly say i have seen worse than this, i suspect the others posters were actually trying to help the OP by showing that there is infact quiet a lot of jobs out there for people. Benefits for a 18 year old is not the way to go, benefits isn't a career choice.

It is often a lot harder to get a job than people think.

You can't just get one for wanting it, or for even applying. Even getting an interview and attending isn't always enough.

And applying for jobs can be expensive. Imagine if you had to buy enough newspapers and spend enough hours online to apply for 100 jobs. And if there were a 50:50 split, the cost of 50 envelopes and 50 lots of printing out a CV and the time of writing 50 covering letters. Then buying 50 stamps.

Then the cost of getting to the interview.

And if you do all of that lot and still haven't got something more/better/whatever .... it might be that you're starting to realise it is harder than you think.

You can be either: too old, too young (yes, even though there's a law against it); not enough experience, no experience; experience but 100 others applied with more/better experience; face didn't fit; they took on the current manager's relative now. You can even be over-qualified, even for a temporary job. Managers don't like temps that might be better than they are at the job in case they get spotted and taken on and promoted into the next job going that the manager fancied himself. And business owners don't like you if you've done too much/are over-qualified as they say you'll get bored and leave quickly.

Too many jobs on your CV - and they don't like you as you flit about a lot; but if they take you on, they'll probably make you redundant soon enough, putting ANOTHER one on the list.

Not enough jobs on your CV - your experience isn't diverse enough for their needs.

And then there are issues of: location and transport.

Many companies employing people part-time don't want to increase their hours - they'd rather take on another part-timer so they've got more part-timers to fill in extra hours to cover staff off on holidays/sick. But that work's not guaranteed.

And I guess the OP's checking because so many people DO get a good free ride with benefits (even though those people will think themselves hard done by/struggling still). He only asked.

Yes, but that is because I just moved 200 miles as I was living in a remote area where there wasn't any work. And now I am here I've decided to study instead as the market I was targetting has collapsed in the last 3 months due in part to the credit crunch.

Although, I would admit, I might be doing it wrong... I wouldn't know how to do it any differently to how I was.
