Specsavers help

Options
hello
i’m hoping you can help please.
my husband went to specsavers and got 2 pairs of glasses. After 1/2 hour he took them back as he couldn’t see his phone, he could see distance ok just nothing close up. They made an appointment for him to see the dispensing optician a few days later. She said the eye test was fine but he should have had varifocals not single vision lenses. They then wanted to charge him an additional £140 to get them sorted, is this correct? At no point in the initial appointment was he told he needed varifocal lenses or if taking single vision should have 2 pairs.
Does anyone know where do we stand please?

As he has two pairs, could he swap one pair for long distance and the other for close up? (E.g. the two prescriptions he needs in two different pairs). I would expect them to do this for free.

Varifocals are expensive, so if he wants these then yes, it will have an additional cost.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

  • So he has 2 pairs.
1 pair for reading and 1 pair for distance and now he wants varifocals so a third pair.

    Sounds reasonable to me.

Varifocals are just convenient but more expensive .
Plus can take a fair bit of getting used to .

OP reads as distance glassed used to look at phone not reading glasses ??
  • Emsa77 - fairly obvious question - your husband has been prescribed glasses to assist his distance vision (a need presumably revealed by the eye test) so does he actually need reading glasses (eg to see his 'phone and other things close up)?  I can't read anything within arm's length with my distance specs on, I need to swap them for my separate reading specs.  The distance specs are prescribed to bring things at a distance into focus, not things a couple of feet away.  (Apologies if that sounds condescending - it's not meant to be!)

If your husband's eye test revealed a need for reading glasses this would have been discussed with him at the eye test, and the prescription would take account of what had been discussed.  Did the optician tell him that his close vision required adjustment as well as his distance vision, or just his distance vision?

I'd be surprised if the dispensing optician was qualified to say whether the eye test was "fine" or not.  They would not know.  If your husband is unhappy with his specs he needs to ask for a free re-test.  I use Specsavers and they have done this for me in the past.  I thought my new prescription was worse than my previous one and they re-tested me.  The second optician confirmed that the new prescription was in fact correct, and time has proved this to be the case.
FWIW, I have three different specs with three different prescriptions because I do not want varifocals.

Specsavers gave me a prescription for computer glasses and distance glasses. I bought new specs from glasses direct & couldn’t see using either of them.

Went back to specsavers and they did a free retest, turns out the first ones were wrong & they gave me 2 totally different prescriptions & changed the lenses for free even though I didn’t buy from them.

I wear my distance glasses all the time but have to take them off to see my phone/read close up or look “under” the lenses. I can’t wear varifocals due to neck pain

If I had 'distance' glasses, I wouldn't expect to be able to see my phone OK with them.
Stating the obvious, they are for seeing into the distance, not for reading an object 12-18" from your eyes.
I had an endless similar conversation with my elderly Mum who complained she couldn't see the TV.
She was wearing her reading glasses. <<sigh>>

She also complained about being dizzy when she was walking about - she was wearing her reading glasses (she does have distance glasses too).
Never having worn glasses until the last year or so, I didn't really understand this until I got off the bus still wearing my reading glasses (the only ones I need) and the whole world was fuzzy in front of me. A very strange and disorientating feeling.

    So OP:
does your husband have a pair of reading glasses and a pair of distance glasses?
Or does he have 2 pairs with the same prescription?

So you took a prescription to SS ? Where did you have the original eye test? The 2 4 1 offer isnt much cop,  cheapest frames, basic lenses only, etc.
