Hi djdw2001 and welcome to the forum :)

As you have nil income, you would need to apply for a sub-prime card such as CapitalOne, Aqua, Vanquis etc.  But an application with those lenders may not be successful as you don't even get any DWP benefits.

How are you going to pay your monthly credit card statement if you have nil income?

With respect, I recommend you do not apply for a card before you have any regular income.  You would have to wait until you have either a part-time job, a student loan or DWP income.

are you a member of the students union ? get a students union card that will give  you discount. If and when you start university in freshers week banks will be falling over themselves to offer you bank accounts an credit cards
  • You have no income.
Do NOT get a credit card. Not yet.
  • You have no Income how are you going to pay back what you spend on a credit card?
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

The only time you shouldn't worry about the interest rate is when you intend to pay off your statement balance in full and on time. Without an income stream I can't see how you intend to accomplish this. If your ultimate goal is to build up some credit history, then the last thing you want is to miss payments or default on debt, no matter how small the amount.

You'll likely only be eligible for sub-prime cards, but if you manage it responsibly then you'll achieve your goal of building some solid credit history.

No 18 year old wants to hear the advice you have already been given by helpful posters on this thread, but.................wait !  Wait till you have a salary and all the tiresome responsibilities that older folk have. Even if you go to Uni, don't be too anxious to dabble with Credit Cards, especially with the harsh student loans system that did not exist in my time. Good luck with your A levels----it seems like yesterday that I was doing my "mocks" round about this time of the year  :o

this father gave his 18 years old student a credit card. the credit card was stolen.
The father didn't report the card stolen, because the thief was spending less than the student.

Don't know how to respond on this platform but thanks for the information, i have had a part time job before so i have some money saved to spend but i was going to use the card instead of using my debit card and then pay it off straight away. Can i use student Loans as income , would a co-signed card or a authorized user be beneficial to help to build up a credit score
  • Credit history is only built up by the person taking out the credit account.  Secondary cardholders have no responsibility for the account.
