Most CD/DVD games only ask for the CD/DVD to be present when the game starts as a form of copy protection (to ensure you really do own the game by having the disc present). You can often find cracked versions online of the file that launches the game to bypass the check for the physical disc.  Of course you should only use this method if you really do own the game as opposed to a way to pirate a game.
  • Although some old games do require the disk to run at first, sometimes downloading and installing an official update for the game fixes that. I got a Gaming Laptop for about £2k a few years ago that came with a DVD drive. I've only used the drive once and that was to look at my brain after a scan and they gave me a DVD.

But anyway, external drives are available and do exactly the same job.
True,  albeit a very cumbersome way to do things. Much more convenient when they are built in.
The way I look at it,  your paying close to a grand for a gaming laptop,  you'd expect the manufacturer to honour the customer with hundreds of pounds worth of gaming discs and install a disc drive so they can use them comfortably, and not have to carry around extra devices.
c.f. Electric car manufacturers , oh ok we will put in a petrol tank because some owner may have 4.54609 litres of petrol in their garage >:)

Realistically if a game needs the disk from when it was released then it will always need the disk.  Updates generally don't change that behaviour.  They'll fix other things with the update but the need to see the original disk on running isn't an issue as such, its by design.

You should never use a cracked version at all - if somebody has cracked the game security to let you run it, how can you be sure that they haven't also added some malware which might allow your bank account to be cleared?

We are talking about just the file used to launch the game not downloading an entire illegitimate copy of the game. I have used these a lot in the past when games on discs were popular and as long as you download it from a "reputable" source such as gamecopyworld and have a decent anti-virus software your very unlikely to have any issues.

If a game needs the DVD plugged in to be able to start ... find a hack - it almost certainly exists. ;)
Yeah, you are right, Hack is always available but proficiency reduces this way. Also, in today, most of the games played without any need of DVD. The world is smarter now and technology too :p

I don't think I've seen a new laptop (gaming or otherwise) come with a DVD drive for several years.
You can even spend £1800 on a gaming laptop at PC World and not get a DVD: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/asus-rog-strix-g531gv-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-rtx-2060-1-tb-hdd-256-gb-ssd-10194898-pdt.html
As above, spend £15-20 to get an external drive.
Shows how out of touch I am with new stuff.  Its a bit odd though for them to be absent in a gaming laptop. Lots of people got an expencive game collection on disc. I seen dvd drives in desktops today.
Why have they become unfashionable in laptops? Anyone know?
i know what you mean, I bought a new laptop recently and it won’t take my Atari cartridges without me paying extra for an external adaptor.
