I think visits are when someone has viewed your profile, haven't worked out the points as yet1

Points = ThanksOr at least, if you get thanked, it increases your points total.Edit: Ain't Google wonderful? An engaged community is one where people are creating content and interacting with each other in a meaningful way. In Vanilla, reputation points are earned for participation and for creating content that is liked by others. When a member performs certain actions or receives praise, she is awarded reputation points and in some cases badges. For example, uploading a profile photo gives the member the Photogenic badge and ten points. Getting a positive reaction on a comment gives 1 point. Getting a negative reaction on a comment, such as 'off topic' takes a point away. If a moderator 'promotes' a comment, the member will receive 5 points. There are about a dozen actions that will trigger a badge award and close to 70 badges that can be earned.
Maybe not a complete answer as 'points' allocation can probably be tweaked by forum admin, but then I doubt this will be a priority for MSE towers.

And visits...
When viewing a user's profile you can see a count of the number of times that they've visited and also the date that they were last active on the community. Visits are a bit of a fuzzy statistic that can't ever be 100% accurate because we have no true way of knowing if a person is sitting at the computer.
If you are interested in knowing when a visit is calculated, in general a user had to be away from the site for at least 20 minutes. What away from the site means is determined by the following:
- If the user closes the site then they will be considered away from the site so the next time they browse to the site a new visit may be incremented.
- If the user leaves the site open they will be considered away if the site isn't in their active tab. This is to account for users that may have a long discussion open for more than 20 minutes. If you leave your browser open over night then you likely won't trigger a new visit.
This methodology is a heuristic that tries to balance accuracy against the reality that people often leave browser tabs open for a very long time.

Visits is vists to your profile page.
From what ive garnered so far points are a culmination of thanks and badges.
Adding a profile picture gave me the badge 'photogenic' (or similar) and i thought, 10 points. A 'thanks' is 1 point. Theres something else which i havent worked out yet as in theory i should have 108 thanks points and assuming 10 points per badge 180 badge points so 288 points however my current points tally is on 260 so 18 more points than assumed and 18 badges, so maybe 9 points a badge? Or theres an error somewhere.1 -
