Google maps on Android phone

I have a new Motorola Moto G7 Power running the current version of Google Maps on the current version of Android, and all I want to do is remove all the labels that come plastered over the maps nowadays.  According to my searching so far, I need to switch to "Earth View", and to find that I'm supposed to start by clicking the hamburger at top left of Google Maps, but when I do that, I get a blue bar comes up which says "Location sharing, timeline and settings are now here" and it point to my icon thingy at top right.  Can some kind soul please sort me out?

Well on mine I have an icon on the right near the top that looks like a black diamond or square rotated 45 degrees with a V under it - I tap that and get a menu Map Type and Map Details
  • I've just fired up Google Maps on my moto g7 and I can see what the OP means (and is why I hardly ever use Google Maps app). Searched all over my account options and there seems to be no way to disable those labels. I eventually managed to get rid of menus and those pesky labels by a sort of half-long press on the map. But press any longer and I ended up dropping a pin on the map. Then it switched back to cluttered view as soon as my back was turned.
    A masterpiece of UID (not).

Well, I don't have any kind of black diamond but I have found exactly what glennevis found.  I've also found on further searching that there seems to be no way of de-cluttering the latest version.  Verily, some things that Google does are wonderful, but most of them are a major PITA ...

  • Couldn't you go to play store maps and then click uninstall update then it will be like how it was when you first got the phone

Clicking on that icon in the top right hand corner gives access to Settings, Timeline, Location Sharing, etc.  One of the options also listed should be Incognito Mode.  Selecting that mode will remove all of the labels.  Unfortunately it will also disable some of the the other functions such as Timeline and Location Sharing.  Might be worth checking, to see if it suits your needs.  It can easily be turned off again if it causes more issues than it fixes.

Unfortunately incognito mode on mine doesn't remove the labels, so I seem to have a simple choice - put up with all the carp that Google thinks I should need, or find myself an alternative.  Off now to check out OpenStreetMap ...

    Hmm
There used to be a 'hamburger' in the top left corner, but it seems to have gone now!
The 'diamond' just offers 'map type' and 'map details'
    Where has my timeline gone?

On mine, the top right icon leads to Timeline, Settings, etc.  That's the icon on right hand side of the Search bar, it may be your personal account pic, rather than the diamond icon.  Timeline can also be accessed via 'Saved', located between Commute and Contribute at the bottom of the screen.
  • I think google maps is brilliant! Now you can download maps and it has speed limits and traffic there is no need to ever pay for sat nav again.
