Recommend a reward card for me

  • Thanks, but i’m Not eligible for the new customer offer so not as good a deal as it would be.
I didn't know that you had to be a new customer to take out a different Amex card.
    One lives and learns.

You don’t, but the rewards vary. The welcome offer is only available when transferring to cards outside of the same family.

So as far as I’m aware you can’t have an Amex Gold and then get a Platinum card, and get both the rewards.

Have a look at Virgin Mastercard, Earn Virgin miles for free flights/upgrades. Introductory offer for new cardholders to boost miles.

Also you can earn extra miles by shopping online or converting Tesco Clubcard vouchers

Thanks, i’ll have a look but I don’t really fly much and I haven’t flown with Virgin since 2006!  Might be worth it if the rewards never expire as I am planning at least one transatlantic flight in the next 5 years, maybe even 2.
  • How about John Lewis Partnership card - I use it quite a lot although the rewards are paid in JL/Waitrose vouchers so may not be any good for you. Gives real-time (text) notifications of spending and is supported by Samsung pay.

    Thanks.

Again it would depend on how long the rewards last.  I only shop at John Lewis very occasionally, when I want their 3 year warranty usually.  Do Waitrose vouchers work on Ocado?
  • I would recommend an Aqua credit card:  you get 0.5% cashback on ALL spending.

Interesting, i’ve never considered an Aqua as always thought they were a credit builder card, can you get decent limits?

I think you'll find the Tesco debit card is better than their credit card for Tesco purchases, but they're now both fairly useless outside Tesco.
So the verdict is that a Tesco debit card is useful for Tesco petrol and in-store but useless elsewhere, and the Tesco credit card is useless everywhere !
Be good if they were accepting new customers.
Whoops - sorry, didn't know about that.  Tesco's horizons seem to be shrinking: at one time they seemed to do almost everything.  Perhaps their banking will go the same way as their broadband, email and Tesco Direct; they've already slashed their interest rate by two thirds.

Virgin  have now added Air France and KLM to list of airlines you can use your airmiles with

You can also exchange miles for Eurostar gift cards/vouchers.

Thanks but it looks like you only have 2 years to use your rewards so probably not the best option for an infrequent flyer.

The Amex gold was such a simple choice!

I agree, held the card for 12 months then gave it up to avoid the £140 annual fee. Excellent card will take card again in 2 years when I can claim the rewards
