I think it is luck with the staff you get. The designer we saw at homebase seemed a total idiot, wickes much better but still had too many preconceived ideas, Wren staff were so pushy we walked out. What homebase and wickes did though was give us a good idea what we did (and didn't want) without having to go too far. In the end we bought  from discount kitchen factory in chorley. By the point of visiting the showroom I had a design and list of units, but they were able to help with a few problems I hadn't yet worked out. They make the units to order so the interiors colours could be personalised to suit the drawer fronts. Cost wise I don,t think they were massively cheaper than the big names but the quality has been very pleasing. As I self installed I can't offer much advice on how to choose, but if you can find a personal recomendation that would be my starting point.

As for filling awkward gaps we put a bottle rack in to fill 150mm, extra pices of plinth can help too.
