Falling Asleep

Options
Hey,
I work full time and come home, i spend time with my kids and play with the dog, such as tugging pillows with it. I find i then am very tired at late evening, sometimes falling asleep on the sofa until morning i am that tired. I do this regular and i am forgetting to clean my teeth and on a recent dentist inspection i now need two tooth fillings. Has anyone any ideas to overcome this really massive tiredness that comes over me, it is so crippling i am that exhausted. I really want to overcome this so i can stop missing cleaning my teeth as i am very worried about.

Yes of course you are, we are all tired late in the evening.

Unless you are very tired during the day, what you are describing is normal

Suggestion:- go to bed at a set regular time each night.  Sometimes I am in bed by 9pm these days - if you are tired don't lay on the sofa, force yourself upstairs

    Go to bed earlier.

Do dinner. Have a bath and go to bed.

If you need the TV on pop one in your room on a timer so it switches off. That way when you fall asleep you are already in bed.

Alternatively if gping to bed isnt an option. Eat then brush and don't eat after. That way wherever you sleep you already brushed

Have you been to see your GP if as you describe the tiredness is crippling? Just wondering whether there is a possibility you are anaemic or have other vitamin/mineral deficiencies. If that’s been ruled out then it’s a case of looking at your lifestyle and why changes can be made to help with that

You are describing sleep deprivation.  Set an earlier bedtime and stick to it.

Join the club I hate to say but true, I do 12 hour shifts and come home and just collapse on the sofa after spending some time with 4 year old daughter.

You shouldn't be doing more than four of those shifts a week then.  The Working Time Directive has some relevance here.

Set an alarm for 10pm (or whenever), so if you fall asleep on the sofa it'll wake you up and then you can brush your teeth.

What time is 'late evening'? Everyone has their own opinion on when that actually is!

  • A friend of mine, on the autism spectrum, and liable to forget the basics when tired, has programmed Alexa to remind him to clean his teeth every night. Maybe something like that would work for you, once you've ruled out any unlying medical issues.
