You should be automatically offered a receipt.

It is Wilkinson’s policy to ask if you want a receipt. I rang their Customer Service to ask if Wilko would issue a refund without a receipt and I was told no they would not.

Sainsburys are also briefly offer customers a choice of whether they want a receipt or not on their self-scan tills. If you do not notice the message because you are packing a bag the option disappears off the screen and you have no receipt.

This is wrong. It appears that some shops have a policy, under the guise of being ‘green’, to encourage customers to decline a receipt, meaning that if they change their minds, or buy faulty goods they are unable to get a refund.

  • Do you need a receipt for a 60p packet of crisps?
  • Well if goods are faulty you only need your bank statement showing the transaction to get a refund. I don't know about wilko but I know sainsburys also do the same for change of mind returns, they can even trace transactions through your nectar card.

How does that work if you pay cash though?

    Do Wilko even sell crisps?

    I agree with you.
In some shops I always have to ask.

Also if you then go into another shop with items in your bag and no receipt they could say you have shoplifted them.

Absolutely agree with you about Sainsbury's compmad1 - in fact I would go further. I believe it is verging on deliberate deception. I can only speak to my own local stores but.......
If you are at the self service till (which is often the only till open late at night) the automated voice LOUDLY tells you something is in the bag which hasn't been scanned....etc.
But the voice which asks if you want a receipt - is a whisper by comparison.
LOUD voice tells you to take all your items
LOUD voice says there is something unexpected in the bagging area etc.....
So how come the only instructions which are whispered - is the one asking if you want a receipt ???
So it is not the customer being encouraged to DECLINE a receipt - but rather being tricked into NOT BEING GIVEN A RECEIPT.

A few Christmases ago I spent hundreds at Sainsburys on Christmas presents. It just so happened lots of family members had moved house, bought first homes etc so I bought loads and loads of Bedding and towels etc.
I was unsure whether they needed double or Kingsize etc.... so bought both sizes.
Come to return the unwanted ones to Sainsburys after Christmas - and Sainsbury's staff said I didn't have the right receipts.
I must have had a dozen different receipts with loads of bedding - sheets, sets of pillowcases, duvet covers, duvet sets etc....
But to ME (and I assume most customers) it was absolutely impossible to tell which item on the receipt matched which item bought. They do not show the bar code, and do not give a detailed description.
I still have a set of Kingsized bedding - and at least 6 receipts from Sainsburys - but staff say none of the items on the receipts are the bedding items I want to return.
I was in complete disbelief - because I ALWAYS keep my receipts
    a) to check my credit card statement
    b) especially for larger items as proof of purchase /guarantee / warranty.
    c) ALWAYS for Christmas and birthdays in case I need to return the item.
So I was completely mystified how I had managed to misplace THE one receipt which staff say I needed.
Then last year I  finally twigged on about the underhand / dishonest tactics Sainsburys is using.
The screen displayed the "Do you want a receipt?" message - I pressed YES and carried on packing my things away.
When I finished I turned to collect my receipt - no receipt.
    I waited....... no receipt.
I called over assistant who had to get the till to print one out, and she said "You should have pressed to say you wanted one".
I told her I had. she just sniffed in disbelief and walked off.
Then I began to take more notice of this short window of time when you are offered a receipt..... and noticed
    1) the voice dropping down to a whisper.
    2) the number of times when I press the YES on screen to say I want a receipt - but the till doesn't print one out..... so I have to ask staff to print one out for me....
And I think back to the year when I had been doing my Christmas Shopping and THE important till receipt being lost.....
Mystery solved....... I obviously never got a receipt - because it was a really busy and noisy time with the store packed with Christmas Shoppers. If I had been madly packing my purchases, conscious of queues of shoppers behind me, and me in a rush to get to another store to buy other things - if I turned to look for the receipt and it wasn't there, I would probably have assumed I must have already put it in my bag along with my purse.......
NOW I realise, the sodding till never printed one out in the first place.
DEVIOUS / DECEITFUL or what !!!!????

LOUD is to also notify the floor walker there may be an issue.
You're standing in front of the machine, so can see the visual and audio remarks for the receipt. The floor walker does not need to know you have been asked whether you want a receipt.

    Floorwalker?
    Are you 'avin a laugh?
Flashing red lights and buzzers won't get you any interest from staff for ages at a couple of the supermarkets I use.
