Ordering small denomination dollars

Hi. I’m wanting to exchange some sterling to dollars from either supermarket/post office but how do I get some of it in small denomination notes?

Ask for them when you change the money.

    As above.

Ordering via an online company can give you a better FX rate but you will get what ever notes they send you.

Buying the traditional way from a bureau de change may give you a poorer rate but you can ask in advance if they have smaller denomination notes to issue.

You can get a reasonable rate from someone like Tesco just as long as you order in advance and collect in store. Just ask for small denomination notes when you go to collect as they don't make the order up in advance.
  • I noticed a sign on the window of a currency kiosk in a large Tescos...

Something like " Ask about our Tipping packs for US Dollars "   I assumed it would be a stash of $1 bills.

I'm in Mexico now.  Everyone seems to tip in US$ apart from me.  Local staff are just as happy with receiving Mexican Pesos.  A 20 Peso note [80p] is ideal, I got £200 worth from my local TUI shop a week before travelling.

Far better and cheaper to use a decent debit card in the states to take them out like starling or Monzo

I wouldn't disagree normally but I assume the OP was looking to get some $1 or $5 bills for immediate use for gratuities to porters, bell hops etc. and/or road tolls from the airport.    Even using a debit card at an ATM at the airport would likely result in $20+ size bills plus the withdrawal fee.
